Golden Nuggets: Is Jimmy G ready for primetime?

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at San Francisco 49ers Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers links for Saturday October 5, 2019

The 49ers, Browns Monday night showdown is only two short days away, and just about every angle has been analyzed and covered over the course of the week. But there is one stone left unturned, and that is the 49ers primetime debut of one Jimmy Garoppolo.

Despite having been with the 49ers since midway through the 2017 season, and having started a total of 11 games with the team, Jimmy G has yet to suit up and start for the Niners in a primetime game.

And while that might not seem like a huge deal on the surface, it actually is when you consider that Garoppolo is still untested in the eyes of many fans and media alike, and one of the big tests for a QB in the NFL is how they perform in the bright lights of a primetime game.

The top QBs in the league like Brady, Brees, Russell Wilson, and Mahomes all step up on the big stage and perform at their best. While QBs like Kirk Cousins, for whatever reason, shrink under the microscope of primetime scrutiny.

So which one will Jimmy G be? A primetime stud, or a primetime dud?

The good news is we aren’t entirely without precedence. While he has never started a primetime game in his career with the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo did have an opportunity to start one Sunday Night game while still a member of the New England Patriots.

In 2016, Garoppolo - starting for a suspended Tom Brady - took the Patriots on the road and outdueled Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals 23-21 in a Sunday night show down, completing 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards and throwing for one TD and zero interceptions, finishing the game with a 104.7 passer rating.

If you had told him then that it would be another 3 years and 26 days before he would start another primetime game, I’m sure he would’ve said you were crazy. But through injury and circumstance that has actually turned out to be the case.

The good news for 49ers fans is that Jimmy G has stepped up in just about every difficult situation that he has faced in his career, and to date has never seemed overwhelmed by any one moment, no matter the amount of stress or pressure.

And when the lights turn on Monday Night, and Jimmy G steps onto that stage, I expect to see him calm, cool, and collected. Ready to answer any questions his critics might have about whether or not he can be the franchise QB that can deliver this 49ers team to the promised land.
