Golden Nuggets: Will weather be a factor in Sunday’s game vs Redskins?

Sunday’s showdown with the Redskins is fast approaching and the 49ers continue to be heavy favorites. According to VegasInsider.com the Niners are 9.5 point favorites at most sportsbooks and for good reason: they are better than the Redskins in almost every facet of the game. Offense, defense. Coaching. You name it. And that alone should be more than enough to ensure an easy win for the 49ers come Sunday.

But it’s starting to look like there will be another outside factor that could play a role in the game: The weather.

The current forecast for Sunday - which had originally called for clear skies and sunshine earlier in the week - is now calling for rain. More specifically, the hourly forecast calls for rain beginning early in the morning and continuing through the start of the game and well into the second half.

So how will that affect the game, if at all?

According to sportsbettingstats.com:

The surface will be slower if a game is played in wet conditions. When the surface footing gets sloppy the game becomes a battle of attrition and the game will be won or lost in the trenches, which is on the line.”

This should favor the 49ers as their defensive line is far superior to the Redskins offensive line, which should make it difficult for Case Keenum and company to move the sticks. Meanwhile on the other side of the ball, the Redskins DLine is probably the single best positional group on the team, however the 49ers patchwork OLine has continued to impress both in the run game and in pass protection, which should allow them move the ball well enough to put plenty of points on the board.

The other bit of good news is that the temperature, while cool (57 degrees at gametime), won’t be cold enough to have major impact, and wind is expected to be mild (12mph) which means both the passing and kicking games will only have to contend with the rain as an obstacle.

Of course, as with any weather report, it’s always subject to change - for better or worse. But it’s no secret that Kyle Shanahan would love to run up the score on his former employer this Sunday, and I for one don’t believe that he’s going to let a little rain stop him from doing that. So barring heavy, end of days, monsoon type showers, my guess is that Shanahan and company will have no problem rolling over the Washington Redskins this Sunday, no matter what mother nature throws at them.
