Jaguars vs. Bengals: Week 7 sack analysis

Geno Atkins had his way early, but the offensive line (eventually) tightened up in pass protection.

The Jacksonville Jaguars offense took two-and-a-half quarters, but they finally got back on track last week against the Cincinnati Bengals, scoring a go-ahead touchdown (and two-point conversion) in the third quarter that produced a lead they would never look back from.

Before then? It was rough — Gardner Minshew was under pressure often and two early sacks (both by Geno Atkins) were making us feel like an inexcusable loss to a winless team was inevitable.

So who was responsible for both of those sacks? Let’s take a look.

Sack #1: 3rd & 18 at JAX 15, 7:29 in 1Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew II sacked at JAX 10 for -5 yards (G. Atkins).

By my count, Gardner Minshew has just 2.87 seconds from the snap to when Geno Atkins makes contact with him and begins to wrap him up. That’s not enough time on an intermediate down and distance, much less a third down with 18 yards to go. Cam Robinson has got to do a better job against the stunt.

Sack #2: 3rd & 6 at JAX 7, 4:21 in 1Q

(Shotgun) G. Minshew II sacked at JAX 1 for -6 yards (G. Atkins).

Gardner Minshew has a little bit more time, but the routes don’t help him. Dede Westbrook gets open on the crosser and Minshew might have been able to get it to him, but it’s at that exact moment that Geno Atkins is able to bull rush Will Richardson into the pocket and prevent Minshew from stepping into any kind of throw. It’s a mess all around, but I’m going to pin this one on the young Richardson.

Summary

The offensive line still needs help, but this time the rest of the offense did enough to overcome their mistakes.
