Even in October, the Bengals taking a quarterback with a top-5 pick is very predictable.
You’ve been assigned to make a mock draft, six months before the actual NFL Draft kicks off in October. How do you begin?
You might as well get the quarterbacks off of the board to start.
The Bengals are currently at the top of the draft order with their splendid 0-5 record, but not every analyst believes they will finish at that spot. Do not fear, because you’ll be hard pressed to find a mock draft that has the Bengals picking outside of the top five picks. And for teams drafting in the top five who also don’t have a quarterback of the future, it’s pretty easy to mock them a prospect.
Let’s see what analysts are giving the Bengals in their latest mock drafts.
1. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
Tank for Tua has hit the Queen City. The Bengals are at least two years away from competing so any player not expected to be a part of that team needs to be shipped out for assets. Add a potential franchise quarterback and continue building the offensive line.

If the Bengals win the No. 1 overall pick sweepstakes, securing the quarterback of the future has to be the priority. In Tua, head coach Zac Taylor would get “his guy” to build the offense around and Andy Dalton can be released after the season for a savings of $16 million. Tua’s accuracy and quick decision-making skills are perfect for Taylor’s scheme.

Some of Cincinnati’s struggles can be traced to its defense. On Sunday, the Bengals gave up 514 total yards in a home loss to Arizona. In Week 4, they conceded 326 total yards to Pittsburgh. If they opt to take the defensive route in April, the Bengals could turn to Young, who has 21 tackles and 8.5 sacks through six games.

I have a feeling Zac Taylor would be more interested in Herbert than Tua Tagovailoa because of his more impressive physical talent.

Andy Dalton is not a terrible quarterback, per se, but if he was the long-term answer we would have known that before now. Dalton is a free agent after the 2020 season, and the Bengals could keep him on next year at a relatively cheap $17.7 million salary-cap hit while breaking Herbert in.

Andy Dalton isn’t getting any better and is on the wrong side of 30. It’s time for the Bengals to move on. Herbert has ideal size (6-foot-6, 237), a huge arm, solid athleticism and mobility, and should start quickly at the next level. The young signal-caller needs to be more consistent, but he’s a prototypical NFL quarterback. Someone might trade up to take Herbert higher than this, but we’re not projecting trades. Cincy grabs him here.
