Panthers claim ex-Patriot Caleb Benenoch off waivers

The New England Patriots are in the middle of a busy week, and one of the moves made by the team was releasing offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch: on Tuesday, it parted ways with the 25-year-old which in turn opened up a roster spot that was later used to re-sign safety Jordan Richards. Benenoch had originally joined the Patriots two weeks earlier following a free agency workout, but did not appear in a game for the club.

Despite his unsuccessful stint in New England, it did not take long for Benenoch to find a new home in the NFL: the Carolina Panthers claimed him off the waiver wire on Wednesday to fill a spot on its 53-man team that was vacated when ex-Patriot Chris Hogan was placed on injured reserve. Benenoch, of course, was subject to waivers since he has less than four accrued seasons on his NFL résumé — and the Panthers took advantage.

While the transaction has no impact on the Patriots other than the team now being unable to bring Benenoch back as an emergency option, it does show the popularity of players who previously worked in New England: the former fifth-round draft pick, who started his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, generated little interest upon his initial release earlier this year but never even made it through waivers this time around.

The circumstances worked in his favor, of course, but players and agents certainly notice the reputation the franchise has built over the past two decades. Coming to New England can help turn careers around — just ask Jamie Collins, and maybe one day even the man who filled Benenoch’s spot on the active roster.
