Aerial Attack: C+
It’s a shame that Derek Carr and the passing game did not receive a higher grade because in spurts the performance was actually pretty good. Without Tyrell Williams in the lineup it was up to the not so stellar group of Keelan Doss, Marcel Ateman, Hunter Renfrow, and Trevor Davis at receiver.
Carr’s final stats look good at first glance, he did complete 22 of 28 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns. But if you actually watched the game you know how critical his two red zone turnovers were. The first, a fumble for touchback while extending the ball for the pylon and the second an interception trying to force the ball to Darren Waller.
In the case of the fumble it was a 14-point swing, the Packers took the ball and immediately drove down the field for a touchdown. Not to mention a major momentum shift in the contest.
Darren Waller continues his brilliant season, racking up 126 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns the first of the season for Waller.
Ground Game: B+
Rookie Josh Jacobs seemingly gets better and better each week. Against the Packers, Jacobs set a new career high rushing with 124 yards on 21 carries, ripping off a run of 42 yards in the first quarter.
Jacobs was showing off some shifty moves, making defenders miss all day long. Jacobs showed some guts, playing through a shoulder injury that he suffered in the first quarter.
The ground game would have earned an A had Jacobs converted a fourth and goal from the Green Bay one. Jacobs took a hand off and tried to go over the pile but was met by Packers defenders and he was stuffed for no gain.
Offensive Line: A
Trent Brown was down for the game and was replaced by David Sharpe rather than Brandon Parker. Gabe Jackson made his return to the lineup after missing the previous five games. Despite Brown’s absence and a strong duo of Packers pass rushers the offensive line played very well.
David Sharpe had some technique issues that led to multiple holding penalties, one that negated a Darren Waller touchdown. Luckily for Sharpe the Raiders would eventually find the end zone a second time on the drive.
Speaking of the Green Bay pass rushers, zero sacks were recorded by the Packers, in fact they did not register a QB hit.
Run game was strong averaging five yards a carry totaling 155 yards on 31 attempts.
Defensive Line: C+
Against the run the defensive line was pretty good, allowing only 60 yards on 23 carries, that’s 2.3 yards per carry. Problem for the Raiders defense was, the Packers didn’t have to run it.
The issue as it has been for many years now was the push rush, or lack there of. Credit to Aaron Rodgers, he has an uncanny ability to buy himself time when under pressure and that was the case on more than one occasion.
When you give a quarterback of Aaron Rodgers talent time to read the field and make throws he will pick you apart every time.
Linebackers: D-
It was evident from the start that the game plan by Matt LaFleur was to attack the Raiders linebackers in coverage. Whether it was running backs Aaron Jones (4-33-TD) or Damien Williams (4-26-TD) or even the fullback Danny Vitale (2-43), the result was the same.
Two of Aaron Rodgers five touchdown passes went to backs that were being covered by linebackers.
Secondary: F
The biggest failure as a group was the secondary. Hard to point the finger at one particular guy when they all equally as bad. Erik Harris was flagged for pass interference that gave the Packers a gain of 22 yards, leading to their second score of the game.
Gareon Conley was burnt multiple times including a 59 yard pick up early in the third quarter. What was worse is it appeared there was a miscommunication between he and Karl Joseph. Later in the game Conley missed a tackle that allowed Marques Valdes-Scantling to go 74 yards for a touchdown.
Daryl Worley was victim as well, giving up a touchdown to Jake Kumerow.
Special Teams: B
Daniel Carlson converted his only field goal attempt, and AJ Cole had two booming punts that flipped the field for the Raiders.
Trevor Davis was decent in the return game, with a 34 yard gain on a kickoff and long of 32 on punt.
Overall Grade: C-
