The Redskins have released wide receiver Cam Sims, who is probably headed back to the practice squad, and promoted running back Craig Reynolds. Though both players are bottom-of-the-depth-chart at their position, they were both popular with fans during the pre-season.
The move likely indicates that the coaches do not expect Chris Thompson to be able to play against San Francisco on Sunday.
Earlier in the week, interim head coach Bill Callahan was asked about using Craig Reynolds if Thompson was unable to go.
“I think as a practice squad player [Craig Reynolds] has done a nice job, and we acquired another practice squad player the other day in [RB] Josh Ferguson. It’s good to get a little bit more depth at the position, of course with adding the fullback too.
So, we’re interchanging all those guys, not only in the running game, but utilizing these guys on special teams as well. They’ve got values in all areas.
To answer your question, [Reynolds] has done well, Ferguson has done well.
Reynolds is an interesting back because he comes from a small school; he did flash in camp. All we wanted to see was more consistency out of his play and I think he’s shown that in the last month and a half. He can catch the ball well, he’s solid in protection, he’s good as a zone runner, [and we] can also feature him in the gap game as well. I think his versatility, I like what he brings to our club.
Many fans were hoping that Reynolds would survive the final cuts following the preseason, so they will probably be excited to see him get an opportunity. Reynolds is likely to be active for the game, along with Adrian Peterson and Wendell Smallwood. Additionally, Reynold flashed his special teams return skills in the preseason. Cam Sims, meanwhile, continues to be a tantalizing prospect at wide receiver; however, the 6’5”, 215 pound 2018 undrafted free agent out of Alabama continues to be unable to carve out a permanent place on the Redskins receiving depth chart.
