Sunday Night Football open thread: Steelers at Chargers

Two struggling teams square off on prime time.

Coming into the season, this battle between Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers was a highly anticipated Sunday Night Football tilt. However, after waves of injuries, we are left with two teams just looking to stay competitive in the AFC.

The Chargers are sitting at 2-3 in the AFC West coming off a disappointing loss to their division rival Denver Broncos. Though Melvin Gordon returned last week, they were stymied on the ground. Their aerial attack was not much better, with Philip Rivers tossing two interceptions and a mere 211 yards. They will face a tough Steelers defense tonight, so it could be tough sledding.

The Steelers have problems of their own, and it starts at the quarterback position. Losing Ben Roethlisberger for the season is a tough blow for the offense. Now, after losing Mason Rudolph as well, the Steelers will trot out an undrafted rookie from Samford. Devlin Hodges will start under center under the Sunday night lights for Pittsburgh. He will face a struggling Chargers defense, but expect the Steelers to lean on running back James Conner to ease the burden.
