Previewing this week’s NCAA action.

The top players in college football are strongly established now that we’ve arrived at Week 8. Here are a prospects who will be especially tested in must-watch games.

  • Paddy Fisher, Linebacker, Northwestern v. Ohio State (Friday, 8:30 PM on BTN): Northwestern has not been at its’ best this season, but Paddy Fisher continues to contribute on their defense. The junior linebacker is the leader of the Northwestern defense and will be challenged by an explosive Ohio State offense. Fisher will have his hands full with the OSU passing and running game. Can Fisher contain Justin Fields and company?
  • Dez Fitzpatrick, Wide Receiver, Louisville v. Clemson (Saturday, 12 PM on ABC): Dez Fitzpatrick was a high profile recruit and is just starting to be integral to Louisville’s passing game. The junior receiver has been a playmaker for the surprising 4-2 Cardinals. Fitzpatrick will have to catch passes against the stingy Tigers secondary and big plays from the 6-2, 205 pound junior will be crucial in keeping Clemson on high alert.
  • Bryan Edwards, Wide Receiver, South Carolina v. Florida (Saturday, 12 PM on ESPN): Bryan Edwards had a great game against Georgia last week, scoring a touchdown to help upset the Bulldogs. The sure-handed senior will once again be depended on against a tough Florida team and he is likely to deliver another big game.
  • Derrick Brown, Defensive Tackle, Auburn v. Arkansas (Saturday, 12 PM on SECN): Arkansas is hardly a juggernaut, but they have some explosive players in their run game that will need to be kept at bay. Brown is the big man in the middle at Auburn and he could have another excellent game against a formidable rushing attack.
  • Larrell Murchison, Defensive Tackle, NC State v. Boston College (Saturday, 12 PM on ACCN): Who? The senior defensive tackle has 5.5 sacks in the last two weeks and seven on the season. The quick twitch defender will have to strap in against AJ Dillon and the Golden Eagles, who no doubt will be trying his run defense.
  • Brian Cole II, Safety, Mississippi State v. LSU (Saturday, 3:30 PM on CBS): The Bulldogs have not been great this season, but their senior safety has been a standout on defense. Playing in the shadow of Cameron Dantzler, Cole II has been an excellent run defender and blitzer, while also forcing two turnovers this season. The red hot LSU offense will aggressively attack the Mississippi State defense and Cole II will need to bring some signature plays to keep the Tigers quiet.
  • The Oregon Secondary v. Washington (Saturday, 3:30 PM on ABC): The Ducks have one of the best secondaries in the nation. Cornerback duo Thomas Graham and Deommodore Lenoir (great name) have been outstanding for Oregon and will have a great match up with the Washington passing game.
  • Leki Fotu, Defensive Tackle, Utah v. Arizona State (Saturday, 6 PM on Pac 12 Network): This is one of the best games set for tomorrow. Two high ranking Pac-12 teams with physical running games will face off. Leki Fotu will lead the Utah defense in an effort against Eno Benjamin’s Sun Devils. The run stuffing defensive tackle will be the x-factor in Utah slowing down ASU’s offense.
  • Lavert Hill, Cornerback, Michigan v. Penn State (Saturday, 7:30 on ABC): This high ranking match up will feature an explosive Penn State offense and a physical Michigan defense. Lavert Hill is the premier playmaker in the Michigan secondary and will need a big game against the Nittany Lions to pull of the upset.
  • Trey Smith, Offensive Tackle, Tennessee v. Alabama (Saturday, 9 PM on ESPN): Trey Smith was awarded SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for a dominant week seven showing. This week, the outstanding junior blocker will need to hold down the fort against the Alabama defense. The Vols will have a tough time overall with Alabama, but Smith could help himself a lot by keeping their defensive line quiet.
