Eagles reportedly reached out to Torrey Smith, who is staying retired

No return for No. 82.

Jordan Matthews isn’t the only former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver the team has expressed interest in re-signing.

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark reports the Eagles reached out to Torrey Smith but the veteran free agent is opting to stay retired. Smith confirmed as much via his Twitter account.

Smith was a respectable deep threat for the Eagles en route to their Super Bowl LII victory. The Eagles then traded him to the Carolina Panthers during the 2018 offseason. Smith remained with the Panthers until he was released during final cuts a couple months ago. Shortly thereafter, Smith officially announced his retirement from the NFL.

In theory, Smith fits the mold of the receiver the Eagles need with DeSean Jackson likely out for the rest of the season. But the soon-to-be 31-year-old is staying retired. And so the Eagles will potentially be turning to Matthews instead.

On the note of former Eagles wide receivers, there’s been no mention of the team having interest in 33-year-old Mike Wallace. Wallace was signed to be Philadelphia’s deep threat in 2018 but he suffered a season-ending leg injury in Week 2 prior to even logging a single reception in an Eagles uniform.

So, again, it looks like Howie Roseman will be going with JMatt. He’s the only wide receiver the Eagles brought to Philly for a visit on Tuesday.
