Falcons bring back DE Austin Larkin, preseason hero

It’s a welcome return for a player who showed out over the summer.

The Falcons have brought certain players back over and over again this year, and while Austin Larkin isn’t approaching John Wetzel status just yet, he has bounced on and off the practice squad all year. Happily, he’s back.

Larkin was one of the stars of preseason alongside fellow defensive line John Cominsky. That led many—myself included—to hope that he’d make the roster. While he hasn’t done so yet, I’m hoping he’ll get his opportunity between now and the end of the year, because this team could still use plenty of promising young defensive linemen.

This may be a sign that the injuries piling up on the line are more significant than we’d like. Remember, Takk McKinley and Adrian Clayborn got hurt Sunday, John Cominsky was out against the Panthers with an ankle injury, and Jacob Tuioti-Mariner is currently in line for a pretty big role Sunday against the Buccaneers if even one of those guys can’t go. Larkin may be needed, and I’m confident he’ll be solid if called upon.

To make room for Larkin, the Falcons waived offensive lineman Anthony Coyle, who had been on the practice squad for the last couple of weeks. With Chris Lindstrom potentially nearing a return and the immortal Sean Harlow on the roster, he apparently wasn’t needed at the moment.
