A story of the passing game.
The Falcons put together back-to back-sublime performances against the Saints and Panthers that came out of nowhere and seemed too good to be true. This week, we found out that they were too good to be true — Atlanta went back to being one of the worst teams in the NFL, getting crushed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.
The offense struggled to get anything going, with the offensive line completely collapsing all around Matt Ryan. The defense gave up big play after big play and just couldn’t get off the field on third and long.
There is a lot of great content available here at the Falcoholic, and I encourage you to check it out if you want some in-depth analysis. This article will look at things strictly from a fantasy football perspective (that means looking at nothing other than purely statistics). Here are Atlanta’s fantasy stud and fantasy dud from Week 12’s loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Fantasy Stud/Dud 2019 History:
Past Studs: Austin Hooper (3), Julio Jones (2), Matt Ryan (2), Calvin Ridley (1), Younghoe Koo (1), Atlanta Falcons D/ST (1)
Past Duds: Calvin Ridley (3), Devonta Freeman (1), Mohamed Sanu (1), Julio Jones (1), Mohamed Sanu (1), Matt Ryan (1), Matt Bryant (1), Brian Hill (1)
Fantasy Stud - Calvin Ridley
Stat Line - 6 catches, 85 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown, 1 carry, 15 rushing yards: 16.00 standard league points; 22.00 PPR Points
With Mohamed Sanu in New England and Austin Hooper injured, Calvin Ridley has been called upon to step up. He’s answered with his most prolific two-week stretch of the season coming in the last two games.
Ridley led both teams with 14 targets, and he turned those looks into a nice stat line. Thirty-eight of his 85 yards and his lone touchdown came on the final drive with Matt Schaub throwing him the ball against prevent defense, but the fantasy points count all the same, be it garbage time or not.
As long as Hooper continues to be sidelined, Ridley will be fed targets as the primary option outside of Julio Jones. Continue to fire him up in your lineups as the push for the fantasy playoffs continues through Thanksgiving.
Dud
Matt Ryan - 271 passing yards, 0 passing touchdowns, 1 interception, 1 carry, 8 rushing yards, 1 lost fumble: 7.64 standard league/PPR points
Ryan wasn’t given much help, as his offensive line allowed six sacks, but the numbers are the numbers regardless of circumstance. Ryan had his worst statistical performance of the season outside of the Rams game where he got injured in the third quarter.
The Boston College alum failed to record a touchdown and he committed two turnovers, which is a destructive recipe for any fantasy player. When things got out of hand, Matt Schaub came in and worked against Tampa’s prevent defense, taking away the opportunity for Ryan to at least pile up some garbage time yardage.
This looked like a premier matchup for Ryan to rack up points in, but his offensive line had other ideas. He’ll face a much more formidable defense on Thanksgiving night when the Saints come to town.
