A little late, but we’ll do it anyway
We’re a little late in getting to this, and unless I miss my guess there will be some on the social medias that complain about that, but it’s time to give out our Game Ball for the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
This is the third loss of the year for the Vikings, and after the first two losses I just sort of picked someone. . .or, in the case of the Week 4 loss to the Bears, picked no one. Usually, after a loss, there aren’t a whole lot of candidates for a Game Ball, but since I decided to start doing this again, there’s no point in skipping weeks here and there entirely.
So, I wanted to try to come up with at least a couple of options for the Week 9 Game Ball, and I’ve managed to come up with one option on each side of the ball. It won’t be Dalvin Cook or Kirk Cousins, who have combined for six of the seven game balls given out this season (three each). Cook didn’t have a great game, and I think if I made Cousins an option we’d end up going the full Milton Waddams and just setting the building on fire. No, both of these guys are pretty unheralded, so we’ll add a new name to the list this time around.
With that, here we go.
Ifeadi Odenigbo, DL - Odenigbo had, arguably, his best game in the NFL on Sunday, despite playing just 16 snaps. He got solid pressure on Matt Moore when he got his opportunities, and picked up what, at the time, might have been the biggest defensive play of the game, dropping Moore at the midway point of the fourth quarter with the Vikings holding a 23-20 lead. Odenigbo has rounded into a pretty nice player, which is great to see after the trek he’s made to get to this point.
Laquon Treadwell, WR - That’s right, Laquon Treadwell. After the Vikings got down 7-0 early on and Adam Thielen had taken himself out after deciding his hamstring didn’t feel quite right, the Vikings needed a score. And who came up big? Treadwell did. He made two huge catches on the drive, the first one a 23-yarder to convert a third down and move the Vikings into Kansas City territory, and another third down conversion to set the Vikings up with first-and-goal, leading to the tying touchdown. After what he’s gone through, being cut during the season only to be brought back, he had one of his best games on a day when the Vikings needed another option to step up.
On a week where a lot of the Vikings’ stars really didn’t do a whole heck of a lot, it’s time to look at a couple of guys that might not get nearly the recognition for this week’s honor. Of course, if there are dissensions, they can be put in the comments, as always.
