Panthers fall just short in comeback attempt in 24-16 loss to Packers

NFL: Carolina Panthers at Green Bay Packers Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Panthers gave it all they had but couldn’t pull out the win in 24-16 loss to the Packers.

The Carolina Panthers went to Green Bay, Wis. today to face off against the Green Bay Packers and had a chance to leave legendary Lambeau Field with a win, but they came up just short in their last second game-tying attempt when Christian McCaffrey was stopped just short of the goal line as time expired.

Of course, the Panthers would have needed to secure the two point conversion to tie the game and send it to overtime, but it was all for naught as McCaffrey was ruled down before crossing the plane of the goal line.

The Panthers offense played well enough today, full stop. Kyle Allen threw for over 300 yards in a snowstorm on the road against a team that was aided by questionable officiating. The defense, however, left much to be desired. Both Packers running backs — Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams — were able to run right through them like a hot knife through butter nearly every time they were handed the football. Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams were playing catch like a dad with his child in the park with nary a defender around either of them to stop it.

And then there’s the officiating. I’m not going to say that Jerome Boger and co. are the reason the Panthers lost this game — their lackluster defense and a little bad luck are mostly to blame for that — but the officiating of this game was terrible. The Panthers tried to sack Aaron Rodgers in the end zone and Gerald McCoy was penalized for roughing the passer when he did exactly what the officials have told defenders to do when trying to sack the quarterback and avoid penalties. Yet he was penalized anyway.

The Packers literally grabbed Kyle Allen by the facemask and dragged him to the ground for a sack, and not a single flag was thrown for such a play (there was a flag on that play, though... but it was for holding on Dennis Daley, so at least they were paying enough attention to find something the Panthers did wrong). The inconsistency surrounding the NFL’s referees has to be stopped, because it’s ridiculous that what was otherwise a moderatly enjoyable game was tainted by the stench of piss-poor officiating by Jerome Boger and his crew.

This loss — while probably expected — stings a bit because the Panthers played pretty well despite being on the road, in a snowstorm and having to compete against 18 people on the field instead of the standard 11. I was impressed with Kyle Allen’s moxie on the final drive. He had just over two minutes to drive 89 yards to tie the game in a harsh environment, ad he damn near did it. Hopefully he gains some confidence from that and uses it going forward for the remaining seven weeks of the season.

The Panthers are now 5-4 and play the Atlanta Falcons next week. Hopefully they can put this loss behind them and recover in time for a big divisional matchup to keep their playoff hopes alive as we head into the final stretch of the season.

Live updates

Final score: Panthers 16 Packers 24

And the call on the field stands.

It’s impossible to tell, but it looks like he scored.

CMC is stopped short of the goal line and the game is over. The play is being reviewed.

2nd and goal. 0:04 left.

1st and goal. 0:08 left. Down by eight points. Do your thing, Kyle!

Holy crap y’all!

The pass is incomplete but the Packers jumped offside and it’s 1st and goal!

Allen throws it away so it’s now 4th down.

The Packers jumped offside to give the Panthers a few more yards. It’s still 3rd down, though.

Timeout Panthers. 0:19 left.

Allen finds Moore to make it 3rd down at the 7-yard-line.

Allen throws incomplete to CMC to avoid the sack on first down.

FIRST DOWN DJ MOORE

Timeout Packers.

Timeout Panthers.

And it’s 4th down. The game rides on this play.

Allen throws deep to Moore in the end zone but it’s broken up.

Allen got away with intentional grounding. Wow.

Timeout Panthers.

And catch No. 701 picks up a huge 1st down on 3rd-and-5.

Olsen makes his 700th career reception and gets out of bounds.

Great throw and catch from Allen to Olsen for 18 yards.

Huge first down by the offense.

Two minute warning: Panthers 16 Packers 24

Okay then. He almost threw a game sealing pick six. Yikes.

Kyle Allen has 2:25, all three timeouts and the two minute warning to drive 89 yards to tie the game. Can he do it?

The Packers tried to draw the Panthers offside and fail to do it. They’ll now punt.

And the defense holds. It’s 4th and 3.

Oh man Shaq Thompson just missed an interception on a Rodgers throwaway. It’s 3rd and 14. Big spot here for the defense.

And Allen is sacked and the Panthers will punt. Sigh.

Moore makes a huge first down catch.

Donte Jackson made another huge play to save a touchdown.

TOUCHDOWN PANTHERS! CMC finds the end zone and the Panthers are back in this game! The Panthers are going for two?! They’re going for two! They do not get it, though. Panthers 16 Packers 24

Allen makes a great throw to Jarius Wright, and he comes down with it! Big 1st down there.

The Panthers are moving the ball decently well right now. They’re down by 14 points so they have to score here if they really want to have a chance to win the game.

End of 3rd quarter: Panthers 10 Packers 24

The Packers sack Allen and pull him down by his face mask but apparently that’s okay because the refs were too busy calling holding on Dennis Daley.

CMC knifes his way through the defense for a big first down.

Allen is struggling with the deep ball today. The weather could be a factor, but he has struggled with the deep ball all season.

Interesting kickoff and return there as the ball knuckles and bounces around before White picks it up and runs to the 20 yard line.

And it costs the Panthers three points because the second kick is good. Panthers 10 Packers 24

And it is. It’s an illegal formation and it makes the field goal attempt a 47-yarder.

The kick is no good but there is a flag on the play. It appears to be on the Panthers given how upset Luke Kuechly is.

Rodgers scrambles around but McCoy stops him at the line of scrimmage to make it 4th-and-20. It’s now a 52-yard field goal attempt instead of a 42-yard one.

The Packers commit two penalties on a would-be touchdown pass, and Rivera declines them to make it 3rd-and-20 instead of 4th-and-10.

And Jackson has returned to action. That’s a good sign.

Jackson is questionable to return. The secondary is looking quite bare. This could get ugly.

The Panthers’ run defense is not good today. Both Packers running backs are carving them up at will today.

And he’s being evaluated under the tent.

Jackson was slow to get up on the play. Hopefully he’s alright.

Donte Jackson made a touchdown saving play to break up a pass to Davante Adams there.

Aaand he throws an interception in the end zone. Welp.

Allen finds Olsen for another first down.

CMC picks up the first down and fumbles, but thankfully Greg Van Roten was there to recover it.

And they’re now in Packers territory after CMC picks up nine yards on 1st down.

Allen finds Moore across the middle for a big gain and a first down. The Panthers are near midfield.

White almost gave it back to Green Bay by muffing the kickoff but he got it back and scrambled to the 10-ish yard line. If only the Panthers had signed a guy specifically to return kicks.

Jones cuts through the defense like a hot knife through butter and finds the end zone. Awful series for the defense after Butler’s sack. The extra point is good. Panthers 10 Packers 21

And Jones follows that with a 25-yard run. The defense is asleep right now.

On 2nd-and-26 Davante Adams catches a pass from Rodgers for 38 yards. Donte Jackson got lost on the play. Big yikes.

Vernon Butler sacks Rodgers on the first play of the half, and shockingly there was no flag for hitting him too hard.

And we’re back for the second half. The Packers will start on offense.

Halftime: Panthers 10 Packers 14

GERALD MCCOY BLOWS UP THE PLAY BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. BALL DON’T LIE, Y’ALL. BALL. DON’T. LIE.

The Packers are going to go for it on 4th down with 0:02 left in the half. Let’s see what happens.

LOL they called it on Donte Jackson. My god Jerome Boger is terrible at his job.

It’s 4th and goal and there’s a flag on the field. It appears to be offensive pass interference.

HOLD ON JUST A MINUTE. The play is overturned. It appears Graham didn’t get both feet down.

And the Packers cash in with a touchdown because of course they do.

To give them credit, Buck and Aikman have mentioned multiple times that the call was stupid and wrong.

The refs took away what should have been a safety and now it’s 1st and goal for the Packers. I hate this game sometimes.

Two minute warning: Panthers 10 Packers 14

And of course, Rodgers finds Jimmy Graham for a big 48-yard gain just a few plays later. Sigh.

Rodgers is taken down in the end zone and the refs throw the flag. Oh my goodness it’s the “full body weight” call. Jerome Boger strikes again.

White makes a mistake and doesn’t re-establish his feet after going into the end zone while trying to down the punt inside the 2-yard-line and gives the Packers a touchback. However, there’s a holding penalty against the Packers that puts them back at the 10 so the mistake isn’t as costly as it would have been otherwise.

Allen is sacked on 3rd-and-7 and that takes the Panthers out of field goal range. Sigh.

CMC makes some nice moves to dodge tackles and pick up a first down.

Aaron Jones finds the end zone again and the Packers are back in front. The extra point is good. Panthers 10 Packers 14

Wow, Davante Adams with an incredible catch for 37 yards. Nothing Ross Cockrell could do about that one.

Aaaaand Allen fumbles the snap and it’s recovered by the Packers. Sigh.

Allen finds Moore for a quick strike on 1st down.

Tre Boston breaks up the pass on 3rd and long and it’s 4th down.

Rodgers completes the pass for a first down but the refs call offensive pass interference and the play is negated. That was very generous penalty.

Mario Addison almost sacks Rodgers, but A-A-Ron is able to throw it away.

FIELD GOAL PANTHERS: The kick is good and the Panthers re-take the lead. Panthers 10 Packers 7

The Panthers settle for a field goal attempt.

End of 1st quarter: Panthers 7 Packers 7

The Panthers tried a screen to CMC on 3rd down and it did not work at all.

Greg Olsen follows it up with a 16-yard catch and run of his own.

The Panthers are in Green Bay territory after a 17-yard gain by CMC.

The Panthers get a roughing the passer call, but it’s negated by a hold. I don’t know why that’s a rule, but it is. It’s still first down though.

Allen shows off the wheels and picks up a first down on an eight yard run.

The extra point is good and we’re tied. Panthers 7 Packers 7

And the Packers are an extra point away from tying this one up as Jones scampers into the end zone.

It’s 1st and goal now. Sigh.

Snow is starting to fall at Lambeau. This could be interesting.

Aaron Rodgers is what happened. 1st down.

Big 3rd down here. Let’s see what happens.

Donte Jackson gets flagged for pass interference even though the pass looked uncatchable. Welp.

TOUCHDOWN PANTHERS! Allen rolls out and finds Samuel on 2nd-and-goal for the score! The extra point is good. Panthers 7 Packers 0

Allen uses play-action and finds CMC in the flat to set up 1st-and-goal.

Allen finds Moore wide open and Moore makes several defenders miss for a huge 38 yard gain to the 15-yard line.

The Panthers defense holds and forces the Packers to punt them the ball back.

Aaron Jones picks up nine yards on 1st down. Hopefully that’s not a sign of things to come today.

The opening drive started off promising but ends with a Palardy punt that’s fair caught at the Packers’ 9-yard line.

Allen finds Samuel on 3rd down but he’s short of the sticks and it’s 4th down.

Allen makes a nice spin move to dodge a hit and then... throws is away for literally no reason at all. Okay then.

Kyle Allen’s first pass of the day is an 11-yard strike to DJ Moore for a first down.

It’s quickly 3rd and 5 after two quick runs by Christian McCaffrey.

Hey! A nice kick return past the 35 yard line!

The Panthers will start on offense. DeAndrew White is back to return the kickoff.

The Panthers and Packers kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET. Stay tuned for live updates and running commentary.
