The Eagles came out of the bye with a tough loss against the New England Patriots. Despite an early lead that held until halftime, the offensive impotence of the team totally sunk their chances for a big win at home. The Eagles turned their back on productive rookies for absolutely no reason and it cost them the game.
Andre Dillard: Incomplete
The Eagles’ first round pick was blossoming over the course of the few games he started at left tackle. Capping an encouraging stretch with a brilliant outing against Khalil Mack and the Bears. Despite Dillard’s immense promise and contribution to the team, the Eagles turned back to Jason Peters against the Patriots. The future Hall of Famer continued to be a liability when it came to penalties and once again could not get through the game without missing snaps due to injury. My love for Jason Peters is immense, but the blind loyalty the team has to him despite Dillard being the better player is massively detrimental to their chances this season. With Lane Johnson possibly out for next week, Dillard might get snaps at right tackle. However, if Johnson is healthy, the team needs to plug Dillard back in on the left side and let Jason Peters put his feet up.
Miles Sanders: B
I struggle with Sanders’ grade because of how inept the Eagles were in using (or not using him) last night. Sanders had 11 carries and two catches (four targets) and never got going. The team was hellbent in running back by committee with Boston Scott, yet had no interest in pounding the rock against a defense that gave up 210 rushing yards in their last game. Instead they had Carson Wentz drop back 45 times despite the Patriots fielding a stingy secondary, a productive pass rush and the Eagles wide receivers being as dynamic as beige wall paint. It is baffling that Sanders, their most explosive player without a doubt, wouldn’t be a featured player in a game where Jordan Howard is injured. Truly mystifying what the Eagles are thinking.
JJ Arcega-Whiteside: B
I’m being generous with this grade because Arcega-Whiteside was responsible for the biggest passing play in the game (29 yards) despite only getting 19 snaps on offense. The Eagles continue to bury the rookie on the depth chart and last night that continued to prove a glaring mistake. Jordan Matthews, who got signed a week ago, got SIXTY FOUR SNAPS and had SIX yards receiving. Arcega-Whiteside has been with the team since the spring and apparently is unplayable. And the play he made last night was NICE. It was a big time catch where he did exactly what the team drafted him to do. I’m not saying this is predictive of his greatness, but he showed he has some upside whereas Mack Hollins, Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor are clearing wasting all of our time. I’ve used this term many times, but the way they’re handling JJ relative to the wide receiver group is absolutely coaching malpractice.
TJ Edwards: N/A
Edwards was on the field for 11 snaps. Despite very strong recent play, he is still the third linebacker and primarily used in running downs. The Patriots offensive packages rarely necessitated three linebackers in the field.
Anthony Rush: N/A
After a strong showing by the bears, Rush didn’t see many snaps (24^) against New England. It’s a shame because he deserves more playing time but the defensive line has been playing excellently anyway.
