Seahawks win as two NFC competitors fall, giving them early advantage in wild card race

The Seattle Seahawks improved to 7-2 on Sunday, one of the best starts in franchise history. One team standing ahead of them and a first round bye though is the 8-0 San Francisco 49ers, Seattle’s opponent next Monday in San Francisco. If the Seahawks lose that game, it’ll be near impossible for them to win the NFC West. Win, loss, or tie though, Seattle is well in contention for a wild card spot with seven games left on the schedule.

Especially given a couple of other key results in Week 9.

The Minnesota Vikings led 23-20 in the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs but ended up losing 26-23. That loss dropped the Vikings to 6-3.

The Green Bay Packers never got anything going against the LA Chargers and lost 26-11, falling to 7-2.

The 7-1 New Orleans Saints are on a bye week and they host the 1-7 Atlanta Falcons next Sunday.

All told that makes the current NFC Playoff Standings as such:

1 49ers, 8-0

2 Saints, 7-1

3 Packers, 7-2

4 Cowboys, 4-3

5 Seahawks, 7-2

6 Vikings, 6-3

There are plenty of other teams in the mix, including the 5-3 LA Rams, 5-3 Carolina Panthers, and 5-4 Philadelphia Eagles. Seattle has two games remaining against the 49ers, a game against the Rams, a game against the Vikings, a game against the Panthers, and a game against the Eagles. So when we say that the Seahawks control the destiny of the NFC playoffs, we mean it.
