The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced that they have signed running back Kerrith Whyte Jr. off of the Chicago Bears practice squad. The Bears did have the option of promoting him to their 53-man roster in order to keep him, but they apparently declined.
Whyte was a seventh round pick of the Bears in the 2019 NFL Draft and he made their 53-man roster to start the season. He was cut on September 26th to make room for tight end Bradley Sowell and then re-signed to Chicago’s practice squad the next day after clearing waivers.
The speedy Whyte racked up over 3,700 all purpose yards at Florida Atlantic in 2018 and during the 2019 Bears’ preseason he had 18 carries for 55 yards with 1 TD, he caught 2 passes for 14 yards, and he had 5 kick returns for a 27.6 average. He did however have a 103 yard kick return that was called back in the preseason game against the New York Giants.
In case you missed it, earlier today the Bears put Trey Burton on IR and signed James Vaughters form their practice squad. For more on that move you can click here.
