IS IT FINALLY TIME?
Buffalo Bills special teams ace Steve Tasker is one step closer to a bust in Canton. On Tuesday, he was named one of the 25 modern-era semifinalists for the Class of 2020. While this marks the seventh time Tasker has been a semifinalist, it’s the first time since 2013.
The list of 25 will be narrowed to 15 on January 2nd before the final vote on Super Bowl weekend. Only five players will be selected from the modern-era 25:
S Steve Atwater, LB Carl Banks, DB Ronde Barber, OT Tony Boselli, WR Isaac Bruce, S, LeRoy Butler, OG Alan Faneca, WR Torry Holt, OG Steve Hutchinson, RB Edgerrin James, S John Lynch, LB Clay Matthews, LB Sam Mills, S Troy Polamalu, DE Simeon Rice, DL Richard Seymour, ST Steve Tasker, RB Fred Taylor, LB Zach Thomas, WR Hines Ward, RB Ricky Watters, WR Reggie Wayne, LB Patrick Willis, S Darren Woodson, and DT Bryant Young.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the NFL, this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame class is going to be supersized, though the modern-era finalists will still be capped at 5. Instead of the normal two senior committee nominees, ten will make the cut in 2020. Three contributors and two coaches will round out the group. (Personally, I hope that means former Bills RB Cookie Gilchrist gets a look.)
Tasker absolutely deserves the honor of being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They changed the rules because of how well he played his position and he was a transcendent player. Stats don’t measure his impact on the game. It's Tasker's final year of eligibility for the modern era, and we’re rooting for him this time around!
