The 5 O’Clock Club: DL Day

Washington Redskins v New York Giants Photo by Elsa/Getty Images

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…

The 5 o’clock club is published several times per week during the season, and aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

Today’s 5 o’clock club will simply be a Defensive Line data dump of positive information

Daron Payne

From this week’s Stats & Snaps:

Daron Payne had what was one of his most productive statistical outings of 2019 on Sunday. He tied a season high with 3 pressures (all hurries), with one of those coming on the play Darnold thew his interception on. In addition to that, Payne recorded a pass defense on a third-down play inside the red zone; it was his first PD since Week 1 (at Philadelphia).

Payne racked up 5 tackles (4 solo), with three of those coming on runs he stopped for 2 yards or less on 1st-and-10 plays (one for no gain).

What makes all of these raw numbers look even better is the fact that the second-year D-lineman only played on a season low 32 snaps, a number which was 11 fewer snaps than his previous low. The reduced PT was a result of a sprained ankle that Payne suffered in the game.

Jonathan Allen

The Athletic did a great story this week on Jonathan Allen that focuses on his history and how it has led him to try to help underprivileged kids in the DC area. The article starts by recounding Allen’s childhood years when he ended up living in a homeless shelter.

Allen, born in Alabama, and his brother, Richard Allen III, were initially raised by their mother after their parents divorced when Jonathan was 3. Their lives lacked stability, moving from one temporary living arrangement to another. At least they were together. And then, somehow, they weren’t.

“I’m not really sure what happened, but somehow I ended up in the homeless shelter,” Allen said.

The story by Ben Standig talks about how this led to Jonathan Allen and his wife looking for a way to make a positive impact in the lives of local kids.

The idea of helping homeless youths began ruminating in Allen’s mind around two years ago because of the pain he felt years before.

“I genuinely feel for these kids because I know what it’s like,” Allen said. “On the outside, they might seem like they’re happy and playful — which they definitely are — but when they’re alone, it gets rough. So, anything I can do to help out is the main reason I want to help out.”

That desire led to the establishment and initial funding of the Innovation Lounge.

The details of the project are interesting:

The lounge was filled with laptops, televisions and video game consoles to fulfill Allen’s goal of giving kids at Sasha Bruce Youthwork the tools to succeed. Jonathan and Hannah also announced a $45,000 challenge gift match in support of the Sasha Bruce Rapid Response Fund to encourage others to give back to homeless youth.

In addition to the Allen family’s donation, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 to the cause.

Allen explained why he wanted to participate in this program:

“Today, technology is such a big part of people’s lives, so if they don’t have it, they’re definitely at a disadvantage,” said Allen, an avid video gamer who takes apart and reassembles computers. “Gaming for fun or entertainment or as a stress reliever. Having an email address. Without an email address, you’re not able to apply for a job or have some of the things we would consider basic. This is my way of helping them out.”

“It’s all about the kids. I’m here to be a mentor,” Allen said. “I gave the kids my number. I told them to come to me for advice, a resource even for the smallest thing.”

Allen hopes eventually to recreate this tech lounge and vision at other Sasha Bruce programs. Once the Redskins finish off their trying season he anticipates dropping by three or four times per month, “Just to kick it with them. Obviously, I’m not going to be able to solve all their problems, but for a couple of hours a week, help them in any way I can.”

Tim Settle

Settle has been slowed by injury this season, but earlier on he made the most of his limited snaps while he was still healthy.
