Carson Wentz, Eagles (vs. Seahawks): There have been four QBs to score more than 20 points against Seattle this season. Lamar Jackson you expect, but did you know the other three are Andy Dalton, Matt Schaub and Jameis Winston? I know it hasn’t been pretty for Wentz recently, but given how hot Seattle has been offensively, I see no reason the Seahawks won’t put up points. That means Wentz will have to throw against the NFL’s second-worst pass defense the past four weeks. Seattle has been in its share of shootouts, and Vegas expects Sunday to be no different, with an over/under of 48.5, as of this writing. I have Wentz as a top-10 play this week.

Remove agendas from the equation? You have a quarterback bordering on the elite just entering the prime of his career who’s had a Pro Bowl receiver for one of his 50 career games and threw him a couple 50-yard touchdowns the one chance he got. And you also have a quarterback who needs to be sharper, needs to be more consistent, needs to be better. One doesn’t contradict the other. One doesn’t render the other impossible.

Eagles skill players Jordan Howard, Nelson Agholor, and Alshon Jeffery were all ruled questionable for Philadelphia’s Week 12 game against the Seattle Seahawks but now Adam Schefter is offering some more insight on these injuries. ESPN’s NFL insider reports Howard and Agholor are both “unlikely to play” on Sunday while Jeffery is “is expected to play.”

Five over/unders for Eagles’ Week 12 matchup vs. Seahawks - PhillyVoice
Over their last two games, the Eagles have averaged 2.5 drops per game, including two last week against the Patriots. Against Seattle on Sunday, they’re already facing a tough enough test without making things any more difficult for themselves, and if they hope to come away with a win, they’ll need to cut that number down to zero. However, with a wide receiver corps that could very well consist of Jordan Matthews, Mack Hollins, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and newly-promoted Greg Ward, it’s nearly impossible to have any faith. Hell, with the way they’ve played this season, it would be impossible to trust the Birds receivers even if Jeffery and Agholor were healthy. While I don’t think it’ll be a clean game, I do think (read: hope) the Eagles can keep it below three.

Dealing with Wilson is a whole other subject. You must have a strong pass rush against him. But your pass rushers must be disciplined. If they get too deep or get washed inside, Wilson can take off running and turn disaster into a big play. There will be at least one or two moments in the game when Wilson will get away from an Eagles defender and I’ll be shaking with rage and telling myself I should quit watching football, this isn’t healthy. Then the Eagles will make a big play, giving me hope and sucking me right back in. Will the Eagles spy Wilson? Kamu Grugier-Hill would make sense if they do. Eagles CBs have been better lately and need to keep that trend going. Seattle has some very talented receivers.

Wentz made an extensive effort to spend more time with his teammates this offseason, especially the receivers, in light of a report that he had been selfish and uncompromising last year. In June, after he signed his contact extension, Wentz treated his top three receivers – Nelson Agholor, Jackson, and Jeffery – and tight end Zach Ertz to a celebratory dinner at Barclay Prime. In July, he flew many of the Eagles’ skill position players down to Houston, where they stayed at his new home, for workouts and socializing. Wentz bought Jeffery a plane ticket, but the receiver never showed, sources familiar with the trip said. Jeffery, who was limited at practice all week, declined an interview request Friday.

Success for the Eagles will have to start up front, as is their formula. Last week, the Patriots’ front overwhelmed the offensive line, which surrendered a season-high five sacks of Carson Wentz. The quarterback bears some blame for that number, but it took an average of 4.5 seconds to sack Wentz. The average for Wentz sacks this season is 4.7 seconds, so it’s not like he held onto the ball much longer than usual.

I don’t have a vote but if I did, I would certainly cast it for Harold Carmichael. It is surprising and frankly disappointing that he hasn’t been recognized before. It is hard to overlook someone who stands 6-foot-8 but the Hall of Fame voters have done that for more than 30 years. That’s long enough. Carmichael played 13 seasons in Philadelphia. He still holds the Eagles’ records for pass receptions (589), receiving yards (8,978), and touchdowns (79), which is amazing when you consider he has been retired for 35 years and teams are throwing the ball a lot more now than they did in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles vs. Seattle Seahawks ($3,700). He plays second-fiddle to Zack Ertz, but Goedert still makes pretty good music himself. Goedert has been in double-figure DraftKings points in 3 of his past 4 games, finding the end zone in those three contests. The Seahawks have been in the bottom quarter of the league against the tight end position, and with the injuries at wide receiver and running back, the Eagles will need to rely on its two-headed tight-end monster to keep up with Russell Wilson and Co.
NFL Week 12 spread and over/under picks - PFF
Some will say that this difference in quarterback play is fundamental and likely to continue, and they have a point to a degree. Russell Wilson is the MVP of the league, and the only player to have generated more than two WAR so far this year. However, a lot of negative and unstable things have hit Wentz all season, including the second-most drops in the NFL by his receivers (23), and the 19th-best completion percentage (47.7%) when pressured. With Nelson Agholor nursing an injury that will likely keep him out, and against a defense without someone like Stephon Gilmore who can slow players like Zach Ertz all game, look for Wentz to have a little more success than he has had in recent weeks against a Seahawks defense that is 24th in the NFL in yards per play allowed and 20th against the pass. Finally, and this cannot be stressed enough, the Eagles have the edge in terms of coaching in Doug Pederson. Pederson runs the ball too much on first- and second-and-long plays, but he has a friend in Brian Schottenheimer, and a lack of success on such plays will hurt the Seahawks more than the Eagles, who operate with 33% more plays by virtue of viewing fourth down as a down to play football and not soccer.

The brain says pick the Seahawks. They’ve got an MVP candidate at QB, they can run the ball, and the Eagles are just flat-out mediocre. The gut, however, says Doug Pederson’s bunch strikes when you least expect them to. Plus, Seattle’s “D” is suspect. Prediction: Eagles 27, Seahawks 24.

So, after his best game of the year, Clowney’s availability for the contest Sunday now appears in doubt. Add colder temperatures and a weather forecast calling for rain, and it’s possible that Seattle’s defense could be without Clowney for the first time in 2019. If that proves to be the case, it will certainly be interesting to see where the team turns in order to address its pass rush issues. Prior to a resurgent game against the 49ers, the Seahawks’ pass rush had been near the bottom of the league during prior weeks, and even gave 2018 fifth round draft pick Shaquem Griffin a shot at rushing the passer in Week 10.

At 9-1 on the year, the 49ers are already guaranteed of having their best season since 2013. But since they’ve played so well, expectations have changed. They’re on top of both the NFC and the NFC West, and now the goal is to not just make it to the playoffs, but earn a high seed. The last two games — an overtime loss to the Seahawks and a comeback win over the Cardinals — have been challenging for the 49ers. What’s ahead is a bigger test than any that have come before it, though. They’ve been resilient enough to still be favored in one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. Yet even though the 49ers have only lost once, FiveThirtyEight still only gives them a 56 percent chance of winning the division. That’s almost entirely due to the difficulty of the remaining games on their schedule, specifically the next three.
