Hey, it’s the bye week, so this is okay
Hat tip to the folks at The Vikings Wire, who I saw had this one first.
Usually the mock drafts are Mark’s thing, but since it’s the bye week and we need some stuff to talk about, there’s a mock draft by Luke Easterling over at The Draft Wire that presents what would be a pretty awesome scenario for fans of the Minnesota Vikings.
The real excitement is not with the first selection in the three-round mock, which sees the Vikings go after yet another offensive lineman. Alex Leatherwood out of Alabama. (Great name, though.) No, the real excitement for Vikings fans comes from the second round selection, and it’s a familiar name for any fan of the purple.
(And, if you’ve noticed the picture at the top of the story, you’ve already figured it out.)
Easterling has the Vikings using their second-round pick on University of Minnesota defensive back Antoine Winfield. . .Jr.
It wouldn’t be a crazy pick, that’s for sure. Winfield leads the nation with seven interceptions and has been incredibly good for the Golden Gophers all season long. On top of that, the Vikings might end up having some openings at the safety position after this season. Anthony Harris and Jayron Kearse are both on the last year of their contract, and Andrew Sendejo is only back on a one-year deal. The Vikings are going to need to put someone next to Harrison Smith, and if they lose enough players at the position, Winfield the Younger is a pick that could make sense.
Besides, do you think Mike Zimmer is going to pass on a defensive back if the opportunity presents itself?
Again, it’s probably way too early for mock drafts and such, but with the bye week in full swing, having some visions of another Antoine Winfield going around laying out opposing wide receivers is perfectly okay, in my opinion.
