The San Francisco 49ers officially placed defensive tackle D.J. Jones on the injured reserve with an ankle injury. We talked about this being a possibility on Wednesday, but the move was made late Thursday afternoon. It sucks. There’s no other way around it. Injuries are piling up for this season, and “the next man up” was a tired saying on the seventh 49er that went on the injured reserve. Jones makes it 16 players on the team this season, which is tough to fathom.

Jones’ injury is a significant high-ankle sprain that will keep him sidelined for a while. Kentavius Street is likely to fill his spot on the 53-man roster. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said he’ll decide on nose tackle on Saturday on how the team will replace Jones. They’ll likely have Street, Sheldon Day, and Solomon Thomas fill Jones’ shoes. The only other lineman on the team that’s over 300 pounds is Jullian Taylor, who is out one more week, at least.

Jones is a player. When we’re talking about him this offseason and ranking the 49ers, I’m going to be a lot higher on him than most; I can already tell you that. His PFF grade is only 68, but it’s tough to put a number on Jones and his value to this Niners defense. Simply put, nobody else can hold and beat blocks inside like him.

In other injury news, Kyle Shanahan was on KNBR Thursday afternoon, and he said Jaquiski Tartt and Richard Sherman would miss Sunday’s game against the Falcons. Tartt’s injury shouldn’t come as a surprise as the team signed a safety to the practice squad on Thursday.

Sherman told reporters that the team is being cautious with him, and they’re giving him another week to heal. Sherman said he’ll be ready to go Week 16 against the Rams. He also said he was running 19-20 miles per hour on the treadmill during rehab. I’m okay with him sitting out even longer, but good luck getting Sherman to sit out Week 17. I forget who the 49ers play.
