The Jaguars receive the opening kickoff in Jacksonville. Special teams ace Derek Watt comes up with the tackle. The opening drive is grinding and consistent for the Jaguars eating up 4+ minutes of clock. Drue Tranquill is all over the place early, racking up 4 or 5 tackles on the first drive alone. The Chargers defense winds up bending but not breaking and forcing a Josh Lambo FG to give the Jags a 3 - 0 lead with 7:23 on the clock in the 1st quarter.
The Chargers offense answers in a hurry. After a return to the 22 from Desmond King on the kickoff, Austin Ekeler takes a handoff off the right edge out to the 49 yardline. Then Philip Rivers finds Keenan Allen over the middle who takes it all the way to the 8 yardline. After a pass interference in the endzone gives the Chargers 1st and goal from the 1, Melvin Gordon punches it in on the first try. 7 - 3 Chargers after a 79 yard drive that took 1 minute and 39 seconds.
The Chargers Defense comes out and forces a 3 and out to get the ball back in Rivers’ hands before the end of the 1st quarter.
Rivers and the offense are able to get a couple first downs, but after a few deep shots from Rivers are dropped by Hunter Henry and rookie Jalen Guyton, Rivers is sacked on 3rd and 16 as the 1st quarter expires forcing a punt from Ty Long.
End of the 1st quarter - Chargers 7 - Jags 3
Derwin James and the defense are able to force another punt before the Jags can get much going at all.
The next drive for the Chargers is a good sustained drive. Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler are dominating catching the ball out of the backfield and on the ground. Keenan Allen is also catching everything in his direction and getting yards after the catch. Rivers looks comfortable and is getting good protection. Ekeler adds his 2nd 20+ yard run on the game and the Chargers give it to Derek Watt from the half yard line to punch in the second TD of the game. Chargers up 14 - 3.
After the Chargers defense forces yet another punt, following a great play in coverage from Casey Hayward, the Chargers got the ball back under 2 minutes with 2 TO’s. They didn’t need either of them. Austin Ekeler took another run for huge chunk yards, he’s now at 3 carries for 86 yards in the first half. Then the Jaguars forgot to cover Hunter Henry who is open for a 30 yard TD reception. Chargers go up 21 - 3.
The defense buckles down and forces a 3 and out and are able to get the ball back in Rivers’ hands again with 1:10 and 1 TO. Can they go score again??
Rivers and Co are able to drive down into Jags territory but the drive fizzles out and they are forced to settle for a Michael Badgley FG. 24-3.
Halftime: 24 - 3 Chargers
The second half starts out with a bang. Rivers tosses a perfect pass deep to Hunter Henry deep down the sideline, however Henry lets it drop through his hands. However, the next play is perfect. It’s an all out blitz by the Jaguars and Rivers takes a MASSIVE shot, but as he does he dumps it off to Austin Ekeler on the screen. With blockers in front and no safety deep, Ekeler makes one move then outruns everyone 83 yards for the TD. Chargers quickly up 31-3.
The Jaguars get a drive going on their next possession. After the Chargers defense forces 4th and 3, the Jags pull off a successful fake punt to extend their drive. The Chargers defense forces another 4th down, this time 4th and 6 from the LAC 39. The Jaguars go for it again and are able to pick it up again, this time thanks to a pass interference call against Dez King. Gardner Minshew takes advantage and 2 plays later throws a touchdown pass to the TE. It was a busted coverage that left the TE wide open. 31-10 Chargers.
Rivers and the Chargers put their foot to the throat of the Jags when Mike Williams comes down with his 1st TD reception of the season on a 44 yard bomb from Rivers. Chargers extend their lead again 38-10.
End of the 3rd: 38 -10 Chargers
Rivers’ day is finished with the Chargers up by a million points. Tyrod Taylor in at QB and he and Melvin Gordon lead the team down the field before Tyrod finds Virgil Green for a 14 yard TD pass. 45-10 Chargers.
It really has been a dominant day for the Chargers. On Defense the team continues to lock everyone down and force another punt.
For only the 2nd drive today, the Chargers fail to score and are forced to punt the ball right back to the Jags.
The 4th quarter winds down with the Chargers locking down the Jags again then the Chargers assuming victory formation. What a win.
Final score. 45 - 10 Chargers
