The kicker is winning fantasy games.
The Falcons continued their sheer dominance over the Carolina Panthers, moving to 8-1 against the rivals up I-85 in their last nine matchups dating back to 2015. Atlanta completed the season sweep, outscoring Carolina 69-23 in the process.
The Birds scored a season high 40 points this week, and the fantasy fruit was ripe as a result. Some Falcons players won a few fantasy playoff matchups across the country this week.
There is a lot of great content available here at the Falcoholic, and I encourage you to check it out if you want some in-depth analysis. This article will look at things strictly from a fantasy football perspective (that means looking at nothing other than purely statistics). Here are Atlanta’s fantasy stud and fantasy dud from Week 14’s victory against the Carolina Panthers.
Fantasy Stud/Dud 2019 History:
Past Studs: Austin Hooper (3), Julio Jones (2), Matt Ryan (2), Calvin Ridley (2), Younghoe Koo (1), Atlanta Falcons D/ST (1), Russell Gage (1)
Past Duds: Calvin Ridley (3), Matt Ryan (3) Devonta Freeman (1), Mohamed Sanu (1), Julio Jones (1), Mohamed Sanu (1), Matt Bryant (1), Brian Hill (1)
Fantasy Stud - Younghoe Koo
Stat Line - 4 PAT, 4-4 FGs: 1-1 20-29, 2-2 30-39, 1-1 50+: 18:00 standard league/PPR points
Koo was at the center of nearly everything in this one, converting on eight total kicks throughout the afternoon as a result of the Panthers defense not even hoping to contain Atlanta’s offensive unit.
The Georgia Southern alum finished Week 14 as the number two overall kicker, behind only Miami’s Jason Saunders. He was a potential playoff game winner. Koo also had a nice personal achievement in the fourth quarter, converting on a 50-yard field goal for the first time in his NFL career.
That wasn’t even Koo’s finest play of the game — he recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff following Olamide Zaccheaus’ 93-yard touchdown reception, and even tried to run it back for a touchdown. Koo has given the Falcons three extra possessions in the past two games by way of the fumble recovery and two successful onside kicks.
Dud
Austin Hooper - 2 catches, 32 receiving yards: 3.2 standard league points; 5.2 PPR points
Hooper made his return from injury, and it was nice to see him on the field again. With the tight end position so shallow in fantasy football, however, he was almost a starter in many leagues by default and did not do much in terms of points scored.
While Matt Ryan threw for 312 passing yards, he couldn’t quite connect with Hooper over the middle as much as he would have liked, completing just two passes in six throws to his tight end.
It feels like Hooper will get back on track when he gets into more of a rhythm with Ryan, after being out for a month. He’ll especially earn more of a target share now that Calvin Ridley is out for the rest of the season.
