The Chiefs improve to 8-4 after embarrassing Oakland at Arrowhead Stadium.

It was all Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Chiefs scored seven times as they defeated the Oakland Raiders 40-9, improving to 8-4 on the season. Patrick Mahomes was 15 of 29 for 175 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions — plus a rushing touchdown.

After safety Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Raiders quarterback Derek Carr on the game’s first possession, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs scored first on a short left pass to Darrel Williams, who took it three yards for a touchdown.

Mahomes added another score in the second quarter by way of a 13-yard scramble.

Later in the second quarter, rookie safety Juan Thornhill returned an interception 46 yards to make it 21-0 Chiefs. Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson missed a 44-yard field goal late in the half.

Mahomes looked to have thrown an end-zone interception in the third quarter, but during the routine booth review following a turnover. officials called pass interference on cornerback Trayvon Mullen. On the next play, running back LeSean McCoy ran it three yards for a touchdown and a 31-0 lead. The Raiders finally scored a field goal early in the fourth quarter.

With Darrel Williams leaving the game early due to injury and Damien Williams already out, rookie Darwin Thompson got his first crack at real playing time — and he made the most of it. Thompson finished with 11 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown to give the Chiefs a 38-3 lead.

The Raiders added a touchdown on their final possession. The Chiefs blocked the extra point, and cornerback Charvarius Ward returned the the blocked kick for two points to make the final score 40-9.

Stats of note

  • Patrick Mahomes: 15/29 for 175 passing yards and two total touchdowns
  • Travis Kelce: five catches for 90 yards
  • Darwin Thompson: 11 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown
  • Tanoh Kpassagnon: five tackles (three solo), 1.0 sack
  • Chris Jones: five tackles (two solo), 1.0 sack
  • Penalties: Raiders: 12 for 99 yards | Chiefs: none

Rapid reaction

The Chiefs defeated the Raiders in dominant fashion — and the best part about the victory was the continued success of the defense. The first-half interceptions by safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill set the tone for the game.

And with that, the offense scored more than 30 points, but it still does not feel it is good as it could be. That is a clear silver lining. Also, Darwin Thompson needs more time at running back. After this game, he looks like the Chiefs’ best option there.

Next up, it’s the New England Patriots in Foxboro. It’s time to find out who this team really is.
