Kansas City deferred the coin toss giving the Raiders the ball to start the game. On the back of Josh Jacobs, the Raiders were able to put together what looked like a solid drive before Carr dropped back and threw an interception to Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense took the field with great field position. Travis Kelce dropped two passes and the Raiders got away with a challenged pass interference call on Lamarcus Joyner. However, Mahomes and company worked their magic with a first down conversion to Tyreek Hill in the redzone to keep their drive alive. A swing pass to Darrel Williams in the flat turned into a touchdown and the Chiefs got on the board first.
Return man Trevor Davis mishandled the ensuing kickoff and coughed it up back to the Chiefs deep in Raider territory. The defense, however, was able to step up and force a 4th and 1. The Chiefs went for it on 4th down and the rush attempt was stuffed, forcing a turnover on downs.
The Raiders offense again got a good start, handing the ball off the Josh Jacobs. But an offensive pass interference penalty on Darren Waller put them behind the chains and the Raiders offense was unable to keep the drive alive. They punted to Kansas City and Curtis Riley was able to down the ball inside the 5-yard line. The Chiefs would punt the ball six plays later, giving the ball back to the Oakland offense.
Carr started the drive with a bang, hitting Waller up the left sideline for a 24-yard gain. But the offense was unable to secure a first down over the next three plays. Facing 4th and 1, Gruden opted to keep the offense on the field and handed the ball to Davis on a jet sweep. Davis made a questionable read and bounced the play, missing out on the few inches he needed to gain while turning the ball back over the Chiefs offense.
It took Kansas City eight plays and 60 yards to score another TD. Some heroics from Mahomes included a prayer he threw up to Kelce, who was able to somehow make an acrobatic catch in Raiders territory with Lamarcus Joyner in coverage. After a Nevin Lawson defensive holding call turned a 3rd down into an automatic first down, Mahomes ran the ball into the endzone himself.
Oakland got the ball at their 26-yard line next. Jacobs had three carries, including one for a first down. Carr dropped back and tossed a pass in Tyrell Williams direction. Unfortunately, it was intercepted by another Kansas City Safety, Juan Thornhill. The rookie defender returned his first career pick for a TD and put the Chiefs up 21-0. The Raiders would get the ball back just in time for Daniel Carlson to miss a field goal before halftime.
The Chiefs would turn the opening possession of the 2nd half into 3 points. Rookies Maxx Crosby and Trayvon Mullen made great plays on the drive that forced the Chiefs to settle for a field goal.
Carr and the offense were unable to reciprocate however and Oakland’s drive only lasted five plays. Gabe Jackson was beat by All-Pro DT Chris Jones for a sack on Carr to force 3rd and long. Carr was unable to find anyone open despite his best efforts to hold onto the ball for quite some time, and the Raiders punted it back to the Chiefs.
Kelce got going early with a 47-yard reception over the head of Tahir Whitehead. A few plays later, it looked like the Raiders got an interception of their own with Trayvon Mullen coming down with an errant Mahomes pass in the endzone. The officiating crew reviewed the play and determined that Mullen had interfered with his receiver and the ball was placed on the goal line. LeSean McCoy would trot into the endzone on the very next play making the score 31-0.
It took the Raiders until the 4th quarter to put any points on the board. A field goal by Daniel Carlson, followed by a TD to Derek Carrier a few drives later when the Chiefs defense decided to ease up and allow garbage time scores. The Chiefs weren’t done either, however as they followed up the Raiders field goal with a touchdown of their own. Then, after the Raiders lone TD of the game, the Chiefs special teams blocked the PAT attempt and ran it back for two points, ending the game with an exclamation point on an all-out whooping.
