Rashaad Penny’s first touch on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams proved to be his last of the 2019 NFL Season.
The second-year Seattle Seahawks running back is out for the year after his “significant” ACL injury proved to be an ACL tear, with Ian Rapoport saying the MRI revealed additional (but unspecified) damage to the knee. Penny has battled minor injuries throughout this season, missing time due to ankle and hamstring issues, but this is the first serious injury of his career dating back to San Diego State, where he’d never missed a game.
This is horrible news for Penny and bad timing for the Seahawks offense, who’d steadily incorporated Penny more into the offense and had used him to great effect over the past two weeks. The next players up to replace Rashaad are C.J. Prosise and rookie Travis Homer, although Pete Carroll’s press conference all but indicated this is Prosise’s job for the time being.
“He’s got his own style to him,” Carroll said (via Seahawks.com) . “He’s big, he’s over 220 pounds, he’s fast—(he and Penny) are about the same speed and all that. C.J. has the background as a receiver that makes him a little bit different type of threat that we’ve used when we have him in the game plan, so we’ll look forward to him contributing that way. We know he’s a big play guy, he’s already had a couple of good big plays earlier in the year. We’re going to count on him to really just pick up where Rashaad left off.”
Prosise has had an injury-riddled career and even though 2019 is the healthiest he has ever been, he’s been a healthy scratch on several occasions, including the previous five weeks before the loss to the Rams.
Homer has been a valuable contributor on special teams but he has had zero running back snaps in the regular season.
You can probably expect a heavier workload for Chris Carson as a result of Penny’s injury, which will put him out until training camp.
