Recap: Titans roll past Raiders in Oakland, 42-21

Another huge win for Tennessee.

Sometimes you have to see to believe — that was the case with this Titans team. For years we’ve see this organization toy with us, only to deliver soul-crushing losses in key spots. Now in back to back weeks, the Titans have delivered with massive wins to get to 8-5.

A wild first half

Similar to last week, disaster struck early for the Titans in the form of a turnover. A tipped pass off the hand of Ryan Tannehill was picked off by Maurice Hurst, flipping the field and giving the Raider an early chance at points.

DeAndre Washington quickly cashed in on the ground, putting Oakland up early 7-0.

But just as they did last week, Tennessee had an answer. A quick drive down the field was capped with a Derrick Henry rushing touchdown to even the score up at 7-7.

After a stop, Tannehill was pinned deep on his own nine yard line. He promptly uncorked one to A.J. Brown, who hauled it in and did the rest. Brown got a step of separation on the Oakland secondary and it was over with. The 91 yard touchdown pass was the longest of Tannehill’s career, and gave Tennessee a 14-7 lead.

It didn’t last very long though. Derek Carr was able to answer quickly, thanks to a busted coverage. Rico Gafford was the beneficiary, walking into the endzone on a 49 yard touchdown pass.

Back and forth we went as Tannehill once again found an answer. It was A.J. Brown again, capping off another quick Titans drive. Brown caught a slant and barrelled his way across the goal line, putting Tennessee up 21-14.

An absolutely wild first half continued as Carr found Darren Waller to get down to the Tennessee one yard line. Carr capped the drive with a one yard touchdown to Foster Moreau to tie things up before the break.

Tannehill had under 30 seconds to try to get the Titans into field goal range. A big play down the seam did just that, as Anthony Firkser hauled in the field-flipping pass to set up Ryan Succop with a 42 yard chance.

Succop, who has struggled this year, bounced it off the uprights. After one half, the score was 21-21.

Titans stretch it out in the second half

Kenny Vaccaro was ruled out of the rest of this game with a concussion to open the second half — bad news for a team already down three cornerbacks. But for the first time in a few drives, the Titans actually got a stop to start the third quarter.

Capitalizing on that stop was MyCole Pruitt, who reeled in a long pass from Tannehill to setup the Titans with another scoring chance. It was Derrick Henry capping the drive off once again, bulldozing his way into the endzone for the second time today.

The lead was 28-21 midway through the third quarter.

Another stop led to another chance for the Titans. Tannehill converted a couple of key third down plays to keep the chains moving. Derrick Henry got to 100 yard rushing during the drive as Tennessee pushed past midfield.

The fourth quarter began with another first down toss to A.J. Brown, moving the Titans inside of the redzone. Tannehill finished the drive on the next play as Jonnu Smith pulled down a 50-50 ball in the corner of the endzone to make it a 35-21 game.

The Titans put this game away on the next defensive drive as Jayon Brown scooped up a fumble and scored. Suddenly a competitive game was a 21 point game.

Mike Vrabel’s team keeps landing in must-win spots and they just keep delivering — both behind the arm of Ryan Tannehill and the legs of Derrick Henry. With Houston losing to Denver today, things are getting really interesting in the AFC South.

Things won’t get any easier for this team in the final three weeks with two games against the Texans and one against the Saints left, but they sure seem up to the challenge right now.
