Tom Coughlin fired by Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired EVP of Football Operations Tom Coughlin, according to a statement by Jaguars owner Shad Khan.

Coughlin was hired in 2017 to lead the front office.

Coughlin’s legacy in Jacksonville will not be a positive one. In the early days as a coach and general manager, Coughlin led the team to two early AFC Championship games and four straight winning seasons in the first five seasons in franchise history. But he mismanaged the salary cap and made some questionable roster decisions that sunk the team into a seven-season stretch of missing the playoffs.

After that he spent 12 seasons as the head coach of the New York Giants where he won two Super Bowl titles. He was fired after the team started to disappoint on the field and spent a year outside of football.

And that’s where we find ourselves today — three years into The Tom Coughlin Experiment he has once again sunk this team into a salary cap mess with not much to show for it. He passed on All-Pro quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes despite not having a quarterback on the roster who was a natural thrower of the football. He then passed on the current MVP Lamar Jackson for a backup defensive lineman in Taven Bryan. He’s the NFLPA’s biggest enemy, he forced another All-Pro out the door in cornerback Jalen Ramsey, he’s ruined a generational defense in less than two seasons, and the team still has a question mark at quarterback.

Oh, and our salary cap is a mess for at least the next two seasons because we tied an $88 million anchor around Nick Foles, who has yet to win a game.

Go Jaguars.
