Turning point play of Week 16: DeAndre Washington’s 5-yard touchdown sets the tone for the second half

The headline says turning point play of the week, but this week is more about the “drive of the week.”

The second half struggles in recent weeks have been well documented. This week, the Raiders finally flipped the script and got it done in the second half. After being outscored in the second half 78-9 since Week 12, the Raiders were able to add 10 crucial points to the scoreboard in the latter half.

The statement drive and play of the game took place on the Raiders first possession of the second half. After ending the first half with a touchdown, the Raiders took the second half kickoff and marched down the field on a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by DeAndre Washington’s 5-yard touchdown plunge.

The Raiders decided to run the ball down the throat of the Chargers defense throughout the drive. Of the 13 plays called, nine were runs. Washington was the workhorse, carrying nine times for 32 yards, including the all-important touchdown.

The Raiders would add a field goal on their next possession, and the defense would do just enough to secure the 24-17 win. Somehow, the Raiders playoff hopes are still alive. They will need a lot of help again in Week 17, but as of now there is still a chance.
