A collection of thoughts on the Lions’ Week 16 game.
This season has been so long that I spent enough time wondering during the Lions 27-17 loss how I could work a 1994 dance club song into an article. Let’s just get into it before I lose my mind.
As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thoughts.
A tiny glimpse of the future
We didn’t see a whole lot from the backfield of Kerryon Johnson and Bo Scarbrough. But what we did see of this tandem looked good more often than not. Keep in mind they were running behind the likes of Oday Aboushi and Dan Skipper. So it’s a little hard to judge here. Johnson ran for 42 yards and Scarbrough ran for 34 yards. Each averaged over four yards per carry. If these guys can stay healthy and run behind a healthy offensive line in 2020, the sky may be the limit. The Lions have a lot of problems. This isn’t one of them.
Imagine how good Kenny Golladay could be
Golladay is already really good. He currently leads the league in receiving touchdowns and will more than likely end the season still holding that distinction. Still, he’s only 26-years old and it still feels like he hasn’t reached his full potential yet. That’s gotta be scary for opposing defenses.
Perhaps the biggest reason that it feels like Golladay hasn’t reached his mountain top this season is obvious. He’s not playing with Matthew Stafford. He’s playing with Jeff Driskel and David Blough.
Still, Golladay has the power to take over games regardless of who is throwing to him. On Sunday he led the Lions with six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown that he refused to give up on. I look forward to watching this guy continue to grow.
Tank Watch
Pretty much everything the Lions needed to happen for them to get the highest possible pick in April happened this weekend, even if it had Lions fans sweating bullets. The Giants and Redskins went down to overtime and won right away. They of course blew a big lead to get there first. The Dolphins went all the way to the final straw with the Bengals and of course the Lions blew another lead and then blew another one after that to lose to Denver on the road. This will put the Lions at the third overall pick. Still not exactly Chase Young territory, but if you have to be behind any team here, it’s the Redskins, who are in need of other positions more than defensive end.
What to do about Blough?
Good question. This was probably Blough’s worst game; at least it was in terms of completing passes. He missed on exactly half of his throws and finished the game with his worst completion percentage of the season. He was over-throwing guys left and right and he is a sack magnet. He’s been sacked 13 times in four starts. On top of that, he’s gone just 82-145 for 862 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s completed 55.9% of his passes and has a passer rating of 70.2.
With all that in mind, he has shown flashes of complete and total competence on more than one occasion. He’s still very young at 24-years old. Do you think the Lions should hold onto this kid and give him a chance to be the backup next year?
I say, why not? Look, he’s not now and never will be the heir to Matthew Stafford’s crown. But he could possibly be a decent backup quarterback some day. Maybe even one that could net you a decent late draft pick in a trade. I’m not saying the Lions shouldn’t consider bringing in other arms. But Blough should get a shot this summer.
Please let it end
I spent more time watching the Giants and Dolphins win their games today than I did the Lions first quarter in Denver. This season has been a train wreck. Better yet, you know what this season feels like? It feels like the the time that guy in “RoboCop” when that dude drove a truck into a vat of toxic waste. Seriously, this has been me for the last three or four weeks.
There’s only one more week of the season left Lions fans. It won’t be long before we don’t have to feel like we’re living in OCP occupied Detroit anymore. I’d buy that for a dollar.
