The #Redskins and Senior VP of Football Operations and General Counsel Eric Schaffer have agreed to mutually part ways now instead of May, source said. He’s a respected front office executive who already has interest from several other teams.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 9, 2020
The Redskins have hired Rob Rogers who had been with Ron Rivera in Carolina as their main salary cap expert and also dealt with analytics. The Redskins parted ways with long time cap guru Eric Schaffer today. https://t.co/BtKtD3EGmZ
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 9, 2020
Have heard that Stephen Choi was negotiating contracts with coaches. That was previously Schaeffer's job. A good guy and good soldier is out. https://t.co/fCJSnRww5O
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) January 9, 2020
The Redskins announced Doug Williams as Senior Vice President of Player Development. He will report directly to coach Ron Rivera.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) January 9, 2020
Talked to Doug Williams. He had long talks with Snyder and Rivera. With Rivera having total autonomy of personnel, Williams has a new role. Senior vice President of player development.
— Mike Jones (@ByMikeJones) January 9, 2020
Still working on getting exactly the new description for Doug but the important thing is he’s no longer in charge of personnel.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) January 9, 2020
That will be a new person hired likely after the draft. For the meantime, Kyle Smith and Alex Santos are over college and pro depts. https://t.co/RK63lkUIYj
Rivera explaining some of Williams' responsibilities:"Doug will be an invaluable asset in player development in making sure that all of our players have the guidance and resources needed to be successful on and off the field.”
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) January 9, 2020
He'll be working alongside Malcolm Blacken. #Redskins https://t.co/bQIUpNC4oA
From a team spokesperson: Malcolm Blacken was promoted to Senior Director of Player Development. So while, Doug Williams has a higher title, Blacken will be working side by side with him. #HTTR
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) January 9, 2020
Smart move by Ron Rivera. Doug Williams is a Redskins legend, quality human and a well-liked guy. Move him into a mentoring role to work with players, which is a good fit. Running a personnel department was not.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) January 9, 2020
Very scientific look at what seems like is now the Redskins’ power structure. pic.twitter.com/fXThfOgF8x
— Stephen Whyno (@SWhyno) January 9, 2020
When Ron Rivera's deal with the Redskins was being put together, sources said Eric Schaffer was slated for a key front office role if Rivera felt comfortable working with him. Instead, the Redskins now have replaced Schaffer with Rob Rogers, who worked with Rivera in Carolina.
— MarkMaske (@MarkMaske) January 9, 2020
This says a lot about Eric. Mike's most notable negotiation with Washington was Kirk Cousins. When you have two sides that were that far apart and still maintain respect? That's impressive. https://t.co/T32PhcGfen
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) January 9, 2020
Eric Schaffer is indeed leaving Redskins, source confirms. He’ll land quickly with another team. Has a strong reputation around the league with agents and officials.
— Mike Jones (@ByMikeJones) January 9, 2020
Good deal of cap stuff is going to be GM driven, but an interesting move by Redskins. Panthers had been cap constrained for some time. Redskins have a bad reputation but hadnt had cap issues in ages.

“WHEN WILL SNYDER GET RID OF BRUCE & STOP MEDDLING IN FOOTBALL OPS?? WE NEED THE CULTURE TO CHANGE!!”
— Not Robert Griffin (@Pseudo_RGIII) January 9, 2020
(Snyder gets rid of Bruce & seemingly hands football decisions over to new coach)
“WHAT’S GOING ON?? WHY’S RIVERA GETTING RID OF EVERYBODY & JUST BRINGING IN GUYS HE KNOWS??”
A lot of good people will not return to Ashburn this year. That’s what happens with a true house cleaning. For Dan Snyder to remove people he considers friends shows that maybe he has fully received the message of getting the #Redskins back on track as an elite franchise.
— Lake Lewis Jr (@LakeLewis) January 9, 2020
Step back and consider how much has changed in two weeks. Bruce gone. Schaffer going. Hess replaced. New HC, OC, DC. Yes, same owner, but this is sweeping change, people. Things may or may not get better but they will not be the same. Couldn't have hoped for much more.
— Burgundy Blog (@BurgundyBlog) January 9, 2020
Still in charge of college scouting/the draft https://t.co/BaoJbN0a9u
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 9, 2020
Zampese's resume is ridiculous. Almost everywhere he's gone, the QBs/passing game has flourished. Not sure why he hasn't gotten bigger shots https://t.co/b7OBE66RmE
— Hogs Haven (@HogsHaven) January 9, 2020
Ha. Jay Gruden, who had him in Cincy, said of Zampese in 2016: "He's the most detailed guy I've ever seen… For my lack of detail, he made up for it." https://t.co/D9xf4neFft
— Burgundy Blog (@BurgundyBlog) January 8, 2020
If you want to hear Jason Campbell talk about how good he was as an NFL quarterback, give this a listen. Otherwise, skip to 30:20 to hear John’s always fantastic insight and ideas. He’s one of the good ones. #Redskins https://t.co/th9Hw0JXJf
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) January 9, 2020
He certainly did...I was being mostly facetious. It was just funny how often he mentioned how well he was doing. Zampese insight and the different system verbiage both interesting gets for your pod. Thanks again!

For those keeping track at home, Dan Snyder’s thank you tracker:

Updating our Eric Schaffer story.
— Chris Russell AKA "The Rooster" (@Russellmania621) January 9, 2020
League sources say he will meet w/ a potentially new organization as soon as Friday.
Expect this to go quick. At least one team last winter wanted to hire him for President role. https://t.co/CvEc79ZAmV#Browns #NFL #Redskins
Also wonder if this puts Schaffer in play with CAR immediately. Would be a huge asset to Tepper.
— Dan Hatman (@Dan_Hatman) January 9, 2020
Reminds me of when DET and ARZ 'swapped' staff last year with Mike Disner to DET and Matt Harriss to ARZ.
But with Allen, Williams, and Schaffer moving on. My guess is an outside GM hire is in the works.
— Dan Hatman (@Dan_Hatman) January 9, 2020
Fans : "Organization needs to be blown up." Gets blown up: "Why did they fire that guy, he was so good?"
— The Burgundy Ghost (Nationals 2019 WS Champs) (@HmBrewer72) January 9, 2020
Of course Rivera is going to go with Carolina people. He worked with them & trusts them to follow his orders. I can't guarantee success, but it's too early to suggest failure.

Not good for the trade down crowd. They say “we’re told Ron Rivera likes Haskins, but LOVES Chase Young” https://t.co/lA7FBRdqlX
— I’m Dre (@MrDcSportsBack) January 9, 2020
no... foster should be WLB; speed, playmaking ability (perhaps SDH as a backup there), Holcomb could be there or the middle (would view him there; RF small here) and Anderson at SLB. but big ?s about him there. But as the group is built, this is where I'd see them. have to add.
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 9, 2020
Exactly this. https://t.co/7N1rC3qPpK

For inquiring minds: I am still told Redskins do intend to keep Randy Jordan as RB coach. #httr #redskins @NBCSWashington

Digging in a bit further into FA: some clear #Redskins fits...
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) January 9, 2020
-Kendall Fuller: coming off inj, loved by teammates here. Good player + character.
-James Bradberry: became star in Rivera’s D, zone CBs undervalued/cost less
-Bradley Roby: up & down career but loves Del Rio
#Redskins FA fits continued:
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) January 9, 2020
-FS Tre Boston: fantastic in deep middle, pair well with Collins, two different stints with Rivera, best years of career
-TE Austin Hooper: needs work as blocker, but TEs huge in O for both Rivera & Turner
-QB Bridgewater a wild card ‘veteran’?

That said if he wants to make changes then have at it. More symbolic. they weren’t losing because of this. They won’t win because of this. But in this case I believe it’s just sending a message and that’s ok.

So what this means is:
— TheHogSty (@TheHogSty) January 9, 2020
- new team pres
- new coaching staff with only one holdover
- new training and medical staff
- new head of scouting, with new scouts sure to follow
This is as thorough of a housecleaning as you'll ever see in the NFL.

New Giants coach Joe Judge is expected to speak with former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens about a spot on his offensive staff, per source. The two worked together at Mississippi State.
— Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) January 9, 2020
Same happens on the scouting side. Owners do not want a 3rd market of big salaries, so they artificially keep scout salary pools small. Antithesis of competitive advantage to not invest in your R&D shop. https://t.co/SVBLrF9AkD
