When Mike McCarthy, who called offensive plays in Green Bay, was announced as the new Cowboys head coach, some wondered what this might mean for Kellen Moore. As it turns out, McCarthy wants to keep the young offensive mind, but he has competition.
The new Cowboys head coach has made it clear he would like wunderkind offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to stay in Dallas as part of McCarthy’s staff, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
Such a revelation brings the 31-year-old Moore to a crossroads. He can choose to remain with the Cowboys and learn a new system under McCarthy, further broadening his offensive knowledge base, or he can head back to his home state and become the University of Washington offensive coordinator under new Huskies coach Jimmy Lake.
It’s a difficult decision to make but a win-win for Moore, who guided the Cowboys to a league-best 431.5 yards per game and 27.1 points per game (6th-best in NFL) in 2019, his first season as offensive coordinator. Each side has its benefits, but with McCarthy spending the majority of his head coaching career as his offense’s play-caller, it will be intriguing to see how Moore’s responsibilities would fit within McCarthy’s new staff. The prestige associated with continuing to build a resume as an NFL offensive coordinator could be tough to turn down, though.

Late Tuesday night, after it was reported that Mike McCarthy wanted Kellen Moore to return, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that while nothing is official yet, there’s an expectation that Moore will indeed return to Dallas.

Rams special teams coordinator John Fassel hired in Dallas - @TomPelissero
Aside from trying to keep Kellen Moore, Mike McCarthy has gone about filling out his coaching staff. One area that needs significant improvement is special teams, and on Tuesday night reports surfaced that McCarthy landed Rams special teams coordinator John Fassel.

Rod Marinelli has been coaching the defensive line in Dallas since 2013 but it seems that he’s on his way out regardless of if the coach decides to retire or not. And for his replacement, Mike McCarthy is reportedly targeting the highly accomplished Jim Tomsula.
New Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is reportedly looking to add Jim Tomsula to his staff. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the former San Francisco 49ers head coach is being targeted by McCarthy to become Dallas’ defensive line coach.
Tomsula spent the past three seasons coaching the Washington Redskins defensive line, but there is no word at this point if new head coach Ron Rivera will bring the 51-year-old back in 2020.
Prior to working with the Redskins, Tomsula spent nine seasons with the 49ers. He spent eight years as defensive line coach, spent one game as the interim head coach in 2010 after Mike Singletary was fired and replaced Jim Harbaugh as head coach in 2015.

Even though the news of Mike McCarthy’s hiring broke on Monday morning, the actual deal was announced and made official on Tuesday. Beyond that, McCarthy will have his introductory press conference on Wednesday.

The path that the Cowboys took to get to Mike McCarthy was certainly an unusual one, as Jason Garrett wasn’t officially let go until a week after his season had ended. But ESPN’s Todd Archer gives an inside look at the eight day process for the Joneses to move from Garrett to their new head man.
The Cowboys’ familiarity with McCarthy was mostly from afar. There was little interaction other than cursory introductions over the years. It helped that he held a 7-3 record against the Cowboys as Green Bay’s coach, including two divisional-round wins in the 2014 and 2016 playoffs. A source told ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that part of the Cowboys’ interest in McCarthy stemmed from the fact the Joneses believed McCarthy had beat Dallas with inferior talent.
Sources said McCarthy’s interview with Dallas “could not have gone better.” He spoke openly about his time away from the sidelines, how he would use analytics and about who would be on his coaching staff. Before anybody noticed, his interview had lasted well past midnight.
On Sunday, Jan. 5, the Joneses were convinced McCarthy was their guy and they informed Garrett he would not be back in 2020, as Fox Sports first reported. Jones put out a lengthy statement thanking Garrett for his work and dedication after so many years as a player, assistant coach and head coach, dating to 1992.

Speaking of Jason Garrett, the recently departed head coach had previously been connected to the division rival Giants. But after New York hired Patriots special teams coordinator Joe Judge out of the blue, it seems that Garrett might be up for their offensive coordinator job.
The New York Giants had requested permission to interview soon-to-be-former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett just hours prior to finalizing a deal to hire Joe Judge as their next head coach, which seemed extremely curious.
But clarity has now been applied to that situation.
The Giants did, in fact, put in a request to interview Garrett, but it was not to become the team’s next head coach. Rather, it’s an interview to potentially become their next offensive coordinator.

The hiring of Mike McCarthy has certainly made plenty of headlines, and everyone with even a casual interest in football has an opinion on it. But two of the more respected quarterbacks in history, Troy Aikman and Brett Favre, gave their opinions on the hire.
Aikman: “I think you’re going to see probably a little bit of a different Mike McCarthy in what he wants to do offensively, maybe as well on the management side of things. But I think it was a really good hire. He’s obviously been hugely successful by any measurement as a head coach. I think the Cowboys picked the right guy.”
Favre: ”Mike’s a smart guy. He knows that, and he knows that maybe, at times, Jerry will interfere or say things that you don’t necessarily agree with or don’t like. But it is what it is. I’ll say this, Mike is one of those guys from Pittsburgh. He’s hard-nosed. He’s tough. He is an aggressive personality. If there’s anyone out there presently that can handle that, it’s Mike. I believe that wholeheartedly. ... I think it’s a good fit for Mike, and I think it’s a great fit for the Cowboys.”
