New Giants head coach Joe Judge joined the Patriots’ staff in 2012.
Wednesday afternoon, the New York Giants made Joe Judge’s arrival as head coach official.
Statements followed.
“Over the past couple of days we had great conversations about where this team is and where it is headed and how we are going to get there,” Judge said in the organization’s press release. “My job is to lead our players and coaches. The mission is clear, to win games. There is a process to reaching that objective, and we will implement that process and work that process starting today.”
The 38-year-old Judge had spent the previous eight seasons on the New England Patriots’ coaching staff. His final five in Foxborough came as special teams coordinator, and one who took on the title of wide receivers coach in 2019.
Judge now takes on a Giants team that finished December at 4-12 and has not clinched a postseason berth since 2016.
“Joe has prepared for this moment and is ready for the challenge of leading our team,” said general manager Dave Gettleman, via Giants.com. “His beliefs and principles are all about the team. Because of his background with special teams working under Bill Belichick, he has had the experience of evaluating and managing the entire roster. Can’t wait to work with him.”
Prior to joining New England’s staff, Judge worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Mississippi State, from 2005 until 2007. He then served as linebackers coach at Birmingham-Southern in 2008, and as Alabama’s special teams assistant from 2009 through 2011.
His résumé includes a pair of BCS title victories and a trio of Super Bowl victories.
“He knows what winning looks like and should look like,” Giants president John Mara said. “His exposure and experience in New England and Alabama have helped shape his philosophy of building a winning program and culture. We are thankful that he has accepted the responsibility to lead our team.”
“We had a great conversation, and Joe articulated his vision of leadership and team building,” added Giants chairman Steve Tisch. “He clearly learned some valuable lessons in both those areas while working with Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. He is an impressive young leader, and as we said last week, he will have the full support of ownership to get us where we want to be.”
Judge interviewed for the Giants’ vacancy on Monday. Kris Richard of the Dallas Cowboys, Eric Bieniemy of the Kansas City Chiefs and Don Martindale of the Baltimore Ravens preceded him in the process. As did former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, who has since been hired by the Cowboys.
The 19th head coach in Giants franchise history, Judge succeeds Pat Shurmur. His introductory press conference will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. ET.
