Jason Garrett officially out as Cowboys coach

It took a week longer than most expected, but Jason Garrett has finally been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys informed Garrett on Sunday that they will not be renewing his contract, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports. Garrett and the Cowboys met several times over the past week, and there was some speculation that Jerry Jones may decide to keep him around after seeing what other head coaching candidates were available. Dallas had already been conducting interviews with potential replacements, having sat down with Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis this week. Glazer reported earlier on Sunday that Garrett had been lobbying to keep his job, which was one of the reasons it took the Cowboys so long to formally part ways with him. Garrett has a close relationship with the Jones family, so they may have been giving him the courtesy of hearing him out.
