Search continues to expand as Browns now reportedly want to talk to longtime defensive coordinator who failed in Detroit.
No one can accuse the Cleveland Browns of not exploring all options during the team’s latest head coaching search.
On the same day that Mike McCarthy, a presumed favorite for the Cleveland job, was hired to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the Browns kept their focus on the NFC East Division and have reportedly asked permission to interview Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:

Schwartz has spent the four seasons with the Eagles, including the 2017 season when Philadelphia won the Super Bowl despite giving up 33 points to the New England Patriots. According to nj.com, Philadelphia’s defense has ranked 12th, 15th, 5th and 4th in Defensive DVOA (per Football Outsiders), under Schwartz.
Schwartz has 26 years of NFL coaching experience. Five of those years were spent as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, where Schwartz went 29-51 and had three seasons of double-digit losses. He just missed out on a fourth season when the Lions finished 7-9 in 2013 and then promptly fired Schwartz.
Prior to the Lions, Schwartz spent 10 seasons with the Tennessee Titans, working as the defensive coordinator for eight of those years.
He has a connection to the Browns after serving as a personal scout under head coach Bill Belichick from 1993 to 1995.
Schwartz last interviewed for a head coaching job in 2017 with the New York Giants, who ultimately went with Pat Shurmur after Schwartz reportedly wanted “personnel authority,” according to nj.com.
