The New York Giants had their eyes on former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett since the offseason began, but they took a strange route to get him into the building.
After requesting an interview with Garrett for their vacant head coaching position, the Giants proceeded to hire Joe Judge as the 19th coach in franchise history. In doing so, they cancelled meetings with all other candidates, including Garrett.
Shortly after Garrett’s Cowboys contract expired this past Tuesday night, the Giants had him in East Rutherford interviewing for their offensive coordinator position.
That is where Garrett will remain.
Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the Giants will hire Garrett to become the team’s next offensive coordinator.
The addition of Garrett as a coordinator and not a head coach is a good get for the Giants, and will go a long way in helping provide Joe Judge the sort of experience he’ll need to find success as a first-year head coach.
