And so begins the 2020 offseason
The Kansas City Chiefs have made their first roster move for the upcoming 2020 season, signing nine players to reserve/future contracts.
The most notable name is that of quarterback Kyle Shurmur, who joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt last season. During the preseason, he and Chase Litton competed against each other to become the team’s third (practice squad) quarterback. Shurmur won the battle, spending the first couple of months of the regular season on the practice squad.
Shurmur did, however, spend Week 8 of the regular season on the active roster. As you’ll remember, Patrick Mahomes was injured in the Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos, leaving the team with only one quarterback — veteran Matt Moore — on the roster. Shurmur was elevated to the active roster so he’d be available in case Moore was injured in the Week 8 game against the Green Bay Packers, returning to the practice squad the following week upon Chad Henne’s return from injured reserve.
Heere are the nine player who have received futures contracts:
- WR Joe Fortson (Valdosta State)
- DT Braxton Hoyett (Mississippi State)
- TE Nick Keizer (Grand Valley State)
- DB Chris Lammons (South Carolina)
- DT Devaroe Lawrence (Auburn)
- RB Elijah McGuire (Louisiana-Lafayette)
- QB Kyle Shurmur (Vanderbilt)
- LB Emmanuel Smith (Vanderbilt)
- RB Mike Weber (Ohio State)
If you keep careful track of the Chiefs roster, you’ll recognize that all of these players are currently on the team’s practice squad.
One practice squad player — wide receiver Gehrig Dieter — is not on this list. At this writing, there is no word on Dieter’s status for 2020. We would not, however, bet against him being in the mix when OTAs begin.
