San Francisco 49ers links for Friday February 7, 2020
I said I was going to wait until after the season was over to make up my mind on how I felt about the Emmanuel Sanders trade. While some people were praising the trade and others seemed to be pretty upset about it, I really wasn’t sure what to think. I certainly wasn’t in a hurry to take either side.
It wasn’t long until we were happy to have him. I am pretty sure he was the difference in enough games that we would not even have made the playoffs without him. Sanders caught 36 passes for the 49ers in the regular season for 502 yards but his biggest contribution may have been his veteran experience. I think that was something we had been missing at the wide receiver position since Garcon’s injury.
On the flip side, he cost us $5,970,588 in salary cap space and third and fourth round draft picks. Those picks would be nice to have. I know, we got a fifth round pick in the deal but that does not make up for the other two picks. We did not win the Super Bowl and now Sanders is a free agent who is about to turn 33 years old. According to Spotrac, his value is somewhere around 11 million dollars per year with a two year contract. At thirty three years old his performance could fall off a cliff at any time.
I personally loved what he did for us this year but I also wish we had our two draft picks and the salary cap space. Perhaps we can sign him to a team friendly deal and he will continue to play well for the next couple of years while our young receivers gain valuable experience. I will love the trade if that were to happen.
