How the new NFL/NFLPA CBA is reported to be heading: 7 Playoff Teams for 2020? 17 Game Season 2017?

Could a deal really be weeks away?

Adam Schefter is reporting some interesting news concerning the new CBA proposals.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s story can be viewed Here.

The basics are that per a league source reported to ESPN, the new CBA agreement would mean 7 playoff teams in 2020 instead of 6. There would only be one NFC team and one AFC team to earn a bye week. Additionally, the players on those teams would be paid during their bye week.

It appears that the NFL and the and NFLPA both agree with the new playoff format, but much remains to be worked out.

“The new CBA’s not done, there’s no term sheet yet, there still are issues being negotiated, but I’d be very surprised if there’s not a new CBA for the new league year,” the source said.

Among the proposals is a 17 game regular season which the players have not signed yet signed off on. Earliest this would be possible for would be in 2017. This is one the owners are strongly lobbying for and would eliminate a preseason game if approved.

Personally if a 17 game season is approved I’d like to see another bye week used in this case, to enable that no team has to play a Thursday night game on a short week. I mean, it’s all about player safety right, and extending the season would mean more dollars for all concerned.

Lots left to hash out. Players would expect another game check. Since the extra game means extra risk of injury then the game day active roster should be expanded as well. Could the final 53 become the final 60? How will the extra cap cost be accounted for? There is a lot to work out, but I’m more confident they are heading toward a new CBA agreement this time around.

Will this influence whether Drew Brees plays for the Saints in 2021 and how would this affect his contract.
