Miller: Vikings to do “serious work” on 2020 quarterback class

NFL: Combine Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Which makes sense, given the situation

The 2020 NFL Scouting Combine is officially upon us, with workouts going on as we speak on the NFL Network. That means the NFL Draft is getting closer, and the Minnesota Vikings are apparently going to be plenty focused on the most important position on the field.

According to Bleacher Report draft analyst Matt Miller, who we’ve always been big fans of here, the Vikings are going to be doing some “serious work” on the quarterback class in this year’s draft.

Addressing the offensive line is a need, but I’m told the team will do serious work on the quarterback class. Kirk Cousins is a free agent after the 2020 season, and the team has no young developmental quarterback on the roster behind him.

While there have been some rumblings about the Vikings potentially working out an extension with Cousins to keep him in the fold and decrease his cap hit for the 2020 season, there are numerous other reasons for this team to draft a quarterback this season as well.

As we’ve said numerous times, this team has to have a better option than Sean Mannion as their backup quarterback in 2020 and beyond. The team had Jake Browning on the practice squad last season, but we’re not sure how much belief they have in him. Even if they do like him, he’s probably not ready to be the #2 guy next season.

With the quarterback issues that the Vikings have had in recent years, they need to try to do something to solidify the position. There are teams in the NFL that take quarterbacks just about every year. . .hello, New England Patriots. . .and even if Cousins is the answer for the longer term, it would be nice to have someone behind him that fans (and probably coaches) aren’t scared to death about seeing on the field. The Vikings aren’t spending a first-round pick on a quarterback this year or anything, but they could definitely use a Day 2 selection on one. I’ve heard worse ideas.

Are there any of the lesser-known quarterbacks that you’re a fan of that you’d like to see the Vikings take a chance on in this year’s draft class?
