Opening weekend of the revived XFL league kicked off on Saturday with two afternoon games. The product was met with mostly positive reactions from fans. In an attempt to beef up the scoring and provide more entertainment to its fans, the XFL showcased some interesting new rules that perhaps the NFL could learn a thing or two from.
The first notable change was made evident very early on. During kickoffs, the return team (aside from the returner himself) lines up at its own 30-yard line, while the coverage team lines up at the 35-yard line. Both sides can only make a move once the returner touches the ball or three seconds after the ball hits the ground. This rule was put in place to prevent violent collisions during kickoffs.

Probably the coolest addition to the sport, however, is the XFL’s version of earning points after a touchdown. Instead of being given the option to kick a field goal or go for the two-point conversion, they eliminated the point-after all together and gave teams the option to go for one, two or three points after scoring a TD.

Most teams decided to take the safe route and go for one point during the opening set of games, but having the option to go for three adds an exciting element to the game.

What are your thoughts on the XFL so far?
The rule changes added a refreshing new look to the sport of football, but the highlight(s) of the day had to be the sideline interviews after big plays and the access into the locker room at halftime. I never thought I’d see the day where we’d get to hear from the kicker himself immediately after missing a field goal, or hearing a player drop an “f-bomb” on live television after committing a personal foul.

Granted, it’s only been one day, but I did not expect to enjoy the XFL as much as I already have, and if we continue to get content like this, then I’m all for the year-round football that we’ve been promised.
