Rick Spielman shoots down dumb Stefon Diggs trade rumors

Presumably because they are, in fact, dumb

We’re not even out of the month of February yet, but Minnesota Vikings fans have already been given enough stupidity to last them for the entire offseason, largely because of the still persisting trade rumors surrounding wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Vikings’ GM Rick Spielman attempted to set the record straight about just how dumb those rumors are.

Now, I’m sure the immediate response to this will be Spielman famously saying that the Vikings had no intention of trading Percy Harvin right before they traded Percy Harvin during the 2013 offseason. There are a few subtle differences, however, with the most important one being that Harvin was still on his rookie contract in 2013 and it wasn’t going to cost the Vikings nine million freaking dollars in dead cap to trade him away.

What I’m saying is the comparison doesn’t wash, as the circumstances really aren’t similar, but I know people are going to make it anyway.

We know that the Minnesota Vikings are going to have to start making moves here shortly with the start of the new league year just a few weeks away. We’ve already seen Everson Griffen opt out of the remainder of his contract. . .a move which actually puts the Vikings under the salary cap, barely. We’re also expecting a bunch of other moves to take place between now and 18 March.

But, when those moves finally do end up getting played out, we probably shouldn’t expect a trade of Stefon Diggs to be among them. Ted has told you that the idea is stupid, I’ve told you that the idea is stupid, and now the guy that would actually be responsible for making that decision has told you that it’s stupid.

Will people stop pushing these stupid rumors at some point? We can hope, but I fear that’s a bridge too far for most.
