Jimmie Ward (28), S, 49ers (5’11, 193). On Sunday, we published a story about the Eagles’ big plays allowed in 2019, showing all 16 of the 40-plus yard pass plays they surrendered, as well as some other big plays that went for a hair under 40 yards. While it was easy to see how bad the corners were all season long, the exercise of putting video of all of those plays in one place really shined a light on the number of times that Rodney McLeod was at least partly culpable. That has to change in 2020, especially if Jim Schwartz wants to continue to play a large number of single-high looks. Ward played free safety for the Niners in 2019, usually as the last line of defense. San Francisco gave up just 5 pass plays of 40-plus yards (second-best in the NFL), and 34 pass plays of 20-plus yards (tied for best in the NFL). Certainly, the Niners’ stellar pass rush contributed to that, but Ward was also very good in his own right in keeping big plays in check.

The Denver Broncos at No. 15 is a common landing spot for Ruggs in mocks where he doesn’t fall to the Eagles. Howie Roseman might have to find a way to trade up to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ spot at No. 14. But one would think the Bucs are looking to trade up and not down as they potentially draft a quarterback. Jalen Reagor could be a consolation prize if the Eagles can’t land Ruggs.

CASE KEENUM: Would Keenum return to the site of Pat Robinson’s 50-yard pick-6 that started the Eagles off on a 38-7 destruction of Keenum and the Vikings in the 2017 NFC Championship Game? If the money’s right, sure. Keenum makes a lot of sense. He’s a free agent, he’s played well the last few years – for three different teams (51 TDs, 27 INTs since 2017) – he’s won in the playoffs, and he won’t be looking for a starting job. And he won’t cost a fortune. He’s at the top of my list.

Remember the date: March 10th. Officially, it marks the deadline for teams to place a franchise tag on a player. Unofficially, it could reveal whether or not Byron Jones will continue playing for the Dallas Cowboys. Any player who is not tagged will be allowed to enter free agency the following week, opening the door for players to shop their services to all 32 NFL teams. There is a good chance Jones is one of those players. The Cowboys have some important decisions to make, with three of the team’s biggest stars: Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, and Byron Jones all entering free agency. The team must decide if any of these players are worth allocating a good chunk of their salary cap resources over the next several years. The front office certainly has choices, and one of those choices is to buy themselves a little time by slapping the franchise tag on a player of their choosing.

Sammy Watkins, WR, Kansas City Chiefs. Savings from cutting Watkins: $14 million. Watkins has shown flashes of star-making play throughout his six-year career, but has ultimately failed to live up to the potential that made him the fourth overall pick in 2014. This past season was no different. He began it with a three-touchdown, 198-yard performance in the Chiefs’ season opener, had just one 100-yard game in the next 13 games, and finished the year with 14 catches for 288 yards in the postseason. That makes it hard to justify Watkins’ $21 million cap hit for 2020 — especially now that reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes is eligible for what’s sure to be a massive contract extension. With Chris Jones careening toward free agency, the team’s decision may come down to either its second-best wide receiver or the defensive lineman who helped save a Super Bowl win. Then again, in the biggest game of his life, he put Richard Sherman on roller skates.

DeAndre Thompkins contributed six catches for 92 yards and a score while Rashad Ross, a wideout who played in the AAF and has spent time with 10 NFL teams since 2013, led all receivers with 95 yards. [BLG Note: The Eagles should consider bringing Thompkins back to their 90-man roster.]

Johnson flew east to join DC, and he has a take on seat reclining. Namely, he does not believe one should recline their seat on an airplane. He spoke to ESPN’s Dianna Russini and offered up this take. [BLG Note: Johnson is correct. No one should recline unless the seat behind them is empty or they explicitly ask permission.]
Matt McGloin rips coaches during and after Guardians’ loss - New York Post
The XFL has been hoping increased in-game access to players would give fans a more unvarnished look at what goes on during a football game. And Guardians quarterback Matt McGloin didn’t disappoint during a halftime interview with ESPN’s Dianna Russini during Saturday’s ABC telecast. “We need to change the whole entire game plan at halftime,” McGloin said of the Guardians, who were blanked in their 27-0 loss to the DC Defenders at Audi Field in Washington. “There’s a lot going on right now. It’s embarrassing for us for an offense. There’s a lot of things for us to fix and correct.” Guardians coach Kevin Gilbride said he wasn’t pleased with McGloin’s play in the first half.
