Breakdown of QB Case Keenum’s contract with the Browns

A look at how much the team’s new backup quarterback will make with the Browns.

We are breaking down the year-by-year contract details of each of the free agents the Cleveland Browns have signed. Next up, we are covering QB Case Keenum. Keenum’s deal is considered to be 3 years for $18 million with $8 million fully guaranteed.

  • Keenum has $8 million in guarantees at signing, which consists of his $1.5 million base salary in 2020, $2.5 million of his base salary in 2021, and his $4 million signing bonus.
  • If Keenum is on the Browns roster during the 3rd day of the 2021 league year, an additional $2 million of his base salary will become fully guaranteed (presently, the other $4.5 million of his base salary in 2021 is guaranteed for injury).
  • 2022 is where things get a little quirky. If Keenum is on the roster the 3rd day of the 2022 league year (March 21), he will receive a $1 million roster bonus. However, prior to that, after the 2021 season, Keenum has until February 11, 2022 to void the final year of his contract. However, if he decides to do so, Keenum must pay back $3.5 million to the Browns.
  • Unless Mayfield is benched and Keenum becomes a Super Bowl quarterback or something, I’d see no reason for him to choose to opt out of his deal heading into 2022. Now, the Browns might opt to dump his contract (since he’d have a $7.83 million cap his in 2022), but it seems highly unlikely that Keenum will choose the route of voiding his own contract.
