All-purpose yards, not just rushing
Going into the final year of his rookie contract. . .at least, absent some sort of extension. . .Minnesota Vikings’ running back Dalvin Cook has a pretty lofty goal in mind, and one that he could definitely meet if he stays healthy.
TMZ Sports caught up with Cook, and the star running back declared that he was looking to put up 2,000 yards in the 2020 season.
Cook did clarify and say that he was talking about 2,000 yards between rushing and receiving, not just rushing, saying that he could do “1,500 and 500” or “1,400 and 600.”
If he can stay healthy. . .and, as we know, that’s been Cook’s biggest issue in the first three years of his career. . .he certainly has the ability to do that. This past season he played in 14 of the Vikings’ 16 regular season games, and put up 1,135 yards rushing and 519 yards receiving. That’s a total of 1,654 yards, or 118.1 yards/game. In order to get to 2,000, he would have to average 125 yards/game and play all 16 games.
It’s worth pointing out as well that, even though Cook did play in 14 games, there were some games towards the end of the season where the shoulder injury he was dealing with was pretty clearly slowing him down. His numbers could, potentially, have been even better.
There have been some rumblings that Cook could hold out if the Vikings don’t extend his contract. We can get into whether or not that’s a wise move for the Vikings in another post, but he certainly isn’t going to reach that 2,000 yard goal if he’s holding out, so maybe it isn’t on his mind after all.
