Unless the team chooses to release him, of course
The 2019 season was supposed to be the final one of tight end David Morgan’s rookie contract with the Minnesota Vikings, and he spent the entire year on the sidelines with a knee injury. Because of that, it appears that he’s going to be with the Vikings in 2020 as well.
According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Morgan’s contract has “tolled,” in accordance with the rules of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, which means he’s going to be on the Vikings roster for next season at a salary of $735,000 unless the team chooses to release him.
We had some discussions of “tolling” when the Vikings were going through Teddy Bridgewater’s contract situation a couple of years ago, and they ultimately chose not to take that route. Here is the verbiage from the CBA that governs the ability to toll a contract. It’s found in Article 20, Section 2:
Any player placed on a Physically Unable to Perform list (“PUP”) will be paid his full Paragraph 5 Salary while on such list. His contract will not be tolled for the period he is on PUP, except in the last year of his contract, when the player’s contract will be tolled if he is still physically unable to perform his football services as of the sixth regular season game.
The Vikings placed Morgan on the PUP list at the start of Training Camp, which made him unable to practice with the team. Before he could come off of the list, Morgan had another procedure on his knee that ended his season. Because he was on the PUP list when the sixth game of the season came around, the Vikings had the option to toll his contract, or essentially roll the final year of his contract into another one-year deal at the same salary.
This adds a bit to what could be a logjam on the depth chart at the tight end position. Kyle Rudolph is the #1 guy right now, and Irv Smith started to come on quite a bit late in his rookie season. The team seems to like Tyler Conklin as well, and still has practice squad member Brandon Dillon in the mix as well.
Do you think that David Morgan will be a member of the Vikings when the 2020 season starts, folks?
