Derek Wolfe’s time with the Broncos has likely come to an end

The re-signing of Shelby Harris likely ends Derek Wolfe’s time with the Broncos.

It was reported late Friday night that the Denver Broncos have re-signed defensive lineman Shelby Harris to a one-year deal worth up $3.25 million dollars.

This signing solidified a Broncos defensive line that acquired Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jurrell Casey last week, tendered nose tackle Mike Purcell as well as re-signed former Texans defensive lineman Joel Heath. This is not including 2019 third-round pick Dre’Mont Jones and former second-round pick DeMarcus Walker. The Broncos defensive line, especially the defensive end position looks rather settled and full of depth right now. These additions and depth likely mean that longtime Broncos defensive lineman Derek Wolfe is unlikely to re-sign with the Broncos.

The odds of him returning seemed very low after the trade for Casey. Now, the addition of Harris gives the Broncos two starters at defensive end with a promising second-year player in Dre’Mont Jones likely getting snaps as well. So there really is no room for Derek Wolfe on the Broncos roster.

Wolfe played a total of eight seasons for the Broncos and was a consistent force for their defenses during that time. During his eight-year career, Derek Wolfe totaled 299 tackles, 33 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble. He is coming off a bit of a career year in Vic Fangio’s defense where he totaled 34 tackles, 7 sacks, and 1 forced fumble in 12 total games this past season.
