And it seems like it would be feasible
Free agency in the National Football League will officially be underway two weeks from today, and while the Minnesota Vikings still have a bunch of moves they’ll likely be making in those two weeks, we’re seeing speculation as to players they can actually bring into the fold rather than having to say goodbye to.
Over at ESPN, they’ve put together a list of each team’s “perfect” free agency signing, and the one they’ve got for the Vikings not only makes sense, but it appears that it would be feasible.
Their selection is offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski, who spent this past season playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, and has also had stops in Philadelphia and Jacksonville since starting his career with the Oakland Raiders.
The Vikings have a lot of difficult decisions to make this offseason. They’re right up against the cap, and there are players from their 2019 team — namely Anthony Harris — whom they would like to re-sign. There are also positions such as left guard that need an upgrade. Pat Elflein was one of the worst guards in the NFL in pass protection last season, picking up a pass-blocking grade of just 46.8. That was a similar story to his performance in 2018. Wisniewski could be a value option for the Vikings, as he has picked up pass-blocking grades of 70.0 or higher in seven of his nine NFL seasons.
The Vikings are likely going to be bargain hunting this offseason, and Wisniewski is definitely a player that would get that label. Last year with Kansas City, he made just $930,000, according to Over the Cap. I’m not sure how much he would command on the open market this year, but he only started two games for the Chiefs in 2019. As the ESPN article points out, he would likely be a significant upgrade over Elflein at left guard, and the idea of Elflein being a backup seems more palatable than running him out there as a starter again in 2020.
