Wednesday, March 4th, 2020 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet
The 49ers would like nothing more than to resign Arik Armstead and bring the dominant defensive line back for another run at the Super Bowl. Arik had a breakout performance after the 49ers picked up his fifth year option last offseason. Now as a free agent, he can command a lot of money and that’s where the dilemma lies. The team does not have a lot of cap space. Securing a long term deal for both him and the team would be ideal for both parties, but the team could franchise tag him for next season and see if he can replicate this past season’s performance. The franchise tag would cost around $19 million for next season.
Rumors are still being floated out that Tom Brady could be a potential free agent signing for the 49ers. While Tom is a future Hall of Famer and 6-time Super Bowl champion, it’s very hard to see why the team would give up Jimmy Garoppolo for this version of Tom Brady. Tom will be 43 years old when the 2020 season kicks off and is not the same player that he once was. Jimmy just finished his 1st regular season as a starter and took his team to a Super Bowl. Jimmy is 28 and is coming into his 3rd season under Kyle Shanahan’s tutelage. It doesn’t seem to make sense to risk the future of the team to get a 43 year old Tom Brady who is definitely not the same player that he was a few seasons back.
